If, like me, you joined InternetNZ last year to ensure your point of view was not overwhelmed when it came to board election (thanks) and AGM voting, then it's coming up time to renew your membership to continue that mission.

If you didn't join last year, maybe you'd like to this year?

I was in a business leadership meeting fairly recently where the men argued β€˜we have some well-paid wāhine Māori leaders and we pay the 50 Māori and Pasifika women in our lowest paid roles the same as the 5 white men in those roles, so no problemo’ and I just wanted to stab them all with a pencil.

I am gobsmacked by the level of arseholery required to go into a peaceful group of Iranians gathered in public and dance around among them taunting them with an American flag. WTAF?! Sort your shit out, Christchurch.

This is pretty much what we got served up at a cafe in the Wairarapa recently - three huge weak milky lattes in place of what we ordered (two flat whites and a cappuccino)

I can't provie a full timeline cleanse, but here, courtesy of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Associated Press, is an eastern screech owl asleep in an antique store. (The owl was gently, and without incident, removed by NYSDEC and released into nearby woods.)

Even if it’s likely from the outset that it will be denied, departments still need to track down everything in scope, which can take awhile (especially if the numbers in the OIA team have been cut)

Just to be crystal clear this is nothing to do with the laudable Internet Archive and the Wayback Machine. I do see NZ folks using archive.is to get around paywalls, so maybe we should stop that.

I remember attending a meeting about the Ngāi Tahu settlement and conservation and being shocked by the naked arrogance and racism of the greenies in attendance, even by 1990s standards it was bad. I continue to give the side-eye to some people in the Greens.

That’s unfair to professional executives. They all have experience actually running and delivering things - Leggatt never has (politician and lobbyist)

Yes that makes sense to me (after all, 1:100 rainfall in some places is a typical Monday in Fiordland). I think there’s a widespread misconception about the probabilities that make people more cynical about them than they should be. Yesterday- definitely had worse in the last 20 yrs where I live.

16.02.2026 23:09 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Without denying the increased frequency - doesn’t that depend on the scale you calculate 1:100? I had assumed it was 1:100 risk of happening in a given location, rather than 1:100 of happening anywhere in NZ. So then quite plausible to have β€˜1/100’ events every year.

Page of a volume showing a handwritten family tree. At the top of the page written in red capital letters is the family name of Gell. The rest of the page is covered in writing with lines linking family members. Next to some names are the relevant family coat of arms in the shape of shields with various colourful decorations, including stripes, rosettes and swords and crowns.

Lineage, inheritance, or simply knowing who was whoβ€”pedigrees were once essential. Our #ArchiveOfTheWeek, this 1830 volume tracing the Gell family of Hopton Hall (and their connections) is packed with beautifully illustrated coats of arms. A striking window into family history.

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβ€”because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
