@docfanning
I am an Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (www.fanninglab.com). The Fanning lab studies how allostery governs estrogen receptor-dependent transcriptional programs in breast cancer.

π― We are so thrilled our new paper @narjournal.bsky.social is out! Fantastic collab with the labs of Gordon Hager NIH & Franck Dequiedt. Heaviest lifting from Greg Fettweiss, Kaustub Wagh, Diana Stavreva & Alba JimΓ©nez-Panizo. Big thanks to Andrea Alegre-Marti JdC π₯³β¨οΈ

Right in time for the holidays!
As of today, we can confirm that we will be rescheduling all October and November grant application submission deadlines (specific dates to be announced in a future Notice). By delaying due dates that occurred both during the lapse in funding and in the week following, applicants will have access to NIH staff and the help desks as they develop their applications. Peer review meetings that were scheduled to take place between October 1 and November 14 have been cancelled and will be rescheduled, details to come. Additionally, council meetings that were scheduled to take place between October 1 and November 14 were cancelled and will be rescheduled, details to come.

I know & trust that NIH staff will get this round of reviews done. Yet having done my own CSR reviews 'for nothing' & with my own R01 sitting unreviewed now, working on another NIH grant has never felt so painful and futile. A quiet impact on science, perhaps, robbing the joy from looking ahead.
Democracy in action, Illinois.
Proud of our state for peacefully showing up and speaking out together in one voice to fight back against Donald Trumpβs takeover of our democracy.
Just wrapped up my medical school teaching for the year. I happened to have an exceptionally awesome group of M1s. Iβm excited to see where theyβll go from here!
Meanwhile, when the dean utters his refrain, βThank you for all your hard work,β the faculty will simply hear, βSorry, we have no money to pay you.β
RFK Jr. and Trump tell us they want to Make America Healthy Again.
Great slogan. I agree. Unfortunately, they are doing the exactΒ opposite.
Vaccines work. They are safe. They save lives.
No more conspiracy theories. Β Kennedy must resign.
Fanning Lab BBQ 2025! Another good year in the books thanks to this exceptional group! Also, they wanted me to make ribs and brisket, they know I look for any excuse to do a cook.
You all were well represented!
Finally, I really enjoyed the opportunity to explore San Francisco more. Alcatraz was an eye opening experience, being a Chicago guy, I had to find the place that kept Capone.
I was also fortunate to have one of my proposed sessions take place on the latest in hormone-dependent cancers, which featured a fantastic story from Dan Frigo on metabolism in prostate cancer.
I had a wonderful time at Endo2025, catching up with great colleagues doing fantastic and important work in endocrinology. I particularly enjoyed chairing the session on Nuclear Receptor Structural Biology where @dougkojetin.bsky.social gave a powerhouse performance! 1/3

Finished another bronze of a T-cell attacking a cancer cell. This one is heading to Max Krummel at UCSF, who did some of the early studies on CTLA4 immunotherapy. #sciart.
Very proud of Sofia for successfully defending her Masterβs thesis today!! Sheβs starting her PhD in biomedicine at UMiami next year. Canβt wait to see what sheβll accomplish! Iβm a proud PI!

Over the last few years, we took a new direction into #lobular breast cancer oncogenesis. We know loss of the gene CDH1 (E-cadherin) is central to ILC, and is among its earliest oncogenic events. But why? How does this push normal breast toward cancer? 1/n
