Portrait of Carl Linnaeus
Today marks 247 years since the death of Carl Linnaeus (1707β1778). His work underpins modern biology, from placing humans within the animal kingdom to establishing binomial nomenclature still used today (e.g. Homo sapiens). At the Linnean Society, we reflect on his enduring legacy.
Well done @rteone.rte.ie radio. Great documentary on the Alpine saxifrage. A tiny little plant hanging on in a tiny population in Sligo.
Thanks to @dri.ie for hosting all the images and data.
We are busy uploading more Irish specimens from the DBN herbarium. Here is another set collected by JP Brunker in the Guinness Brewery while he worked there in the 1930s and 40s. I suspect he spent his lunch break plant collecting.

After we finished digitising the DBN Irish vascular plants as part of the DigiHerb @interregeurope.bsky.social funded project we decided to add some algae. This is the last specimen we digitised (Porphyrostromium ciliare). Nice symmetry in the barcode number DBN0073073! Well done everyone!
The first tour got great reviews.
If you missed my behind the scenes tour of the National Botanic Gardens, celebrating the centenary of the @injournal.bsky.social, I'll be doing it all over again on Saturday, 2pm
