Custom typeface designed for Linserka, cultural and creative centre in Liberec. The letterforms draw from the building’s architecture as well as from the concept of ‘industrial roots meeting a cultural future’: the lower parts end in sharp right angles, while the upper parts feature rounded endings.

In collaboration with Mjölk architects, we created a new visual identity for the Botanical Garden Liberec. Inspired by ‘Trails of Growth,’ it features an organic twist evoking the movement of growing plants. The identity won a public competition organized by Czechdesign.
One of the great perks of living in Liberec is the chance to go cross-country skiing in the Jizera Mountains in the morning before work. ❄️ And because Liberec is in Europe, you can get there in just 30 minutes by comfortable public bus for a little over 1 Euro. 🇪🇺
Changes are inevitable. Thankfully!

In this spirit, alongside a sneak peek of a typeface-in-progress, I’d like to share the work of one of my favourite singer-songwriters from the United States: Laura Veirs.
That said, there are many things beyond our control, and it remains crucial to focus on what we can influence. Even the smallest moments of joy can contribute to making the world a better place.
Due to the substantial volume of other work, I haven’t had much time to continue developing my type designs lately. And honestly, some of the recent geopolitical events—and the outlook they suggest—have drained a fair amount of the creative energy.

In 2018, the visual identity was refreshed, and with it, the Gradec typeface was updated, including the addition of italic styles.
But win it did, and then we had no choice but to see the typeface through to completion—a true baptism of fire. I must thank not only the client’s patience but also everyone who helped bring the font to life, including Karel Míšek, Jan Hora, Jürgen Huber and many others.
Yes, Michal Kukačka (the visual style’s co-author) and I were young, just barely out of our teens—keen, a little naive, and probably a bit overconfident. Most of all, we certainly didn’t expect our design to win an open, anonymous competition!
The first is Gradec from 2009, a sans-serif typeface designed as part of the visual identity for the University of Hradec Králové. It also happens to be my very first completed typeface.
At the ongoing ‘Identity’ exhibition at the Kampa Museum in Prague, you’ll find a selection of bespoke typefaces by Czech type designers—three of which are ours, and we’re thrilled to see them featured! So, it’s the perfect chance to show them here as well.
