Our goal? To advance our understanding of host-pathogen interactions and uncover new viral entry factors, paving the way for innovative antiviral strategies against viral diseases with epidemic potential.

The DEFENDER project has officially launched!

We are excited to kick off DEFENDER (Identification of Novel Viral Entry Factors and Development of Antiviral Approaches), an EU-funded initiative under the 2024-DISEASE-08-20 call, focused on pandemic preparedness and response.

In the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to the outstanding partners in our consortium – leading experts in virology, structural biology, and drug development – who are driving this crucial research forward. Stay tuned to learn more about their expertise and contributions!

And that was that – the 34th annual virology meeting ended today, with awards and an outlook on the meeting next year in Heidelberg. We at the GfV are very grateful to the local organizing team from @leibnizliv.bsky.social, the many many helpers as well as catering and Conventus!

Keynote speaker Troels Scheel @scheellab.bsky.social from Copenhagen presented how non-canonical capping protects viral RNA from innate immune detection.

The last day of #GfV2025 started with a keynote by Adolfo Garcia-Sastre from New York on TRIM-mediated regulation of interferon responses during RNA virus infection.

Wrap-up of Innate Immunity I: Olinda Veiga from Oldenburg presented the characterization of TMEM62 as a novel restriction factor of hepatitis E virus #GfV2025 (HMB).

Just now, keynote speaker Joe Grove from Glasgow, presented how machine learning helped resolve the structures of flaviviral E1 proteins and identify fusion mechanisms. This strategy can be used to identify structural similarities between fusion proteins in the virosphere.

When the conference gets really intense and fruitful: discussions at 100s of posters during the three poster sessions.

Supporting the next generation of virologists and scientists is important and important to us. Currently we introduce all initiatives and working groups by the youngGfV #jGfV to do exactly this

The #jGfV session with a journal club on improbable research was a lot of fun, including "How to cook the perfect egg," "No time to die," and "Viewing coronavirus through memes via WhatsApp." The session ended with a discussion round with editors and editors-in-chief
