I advocate for and improve research data management where I am (which is Virginia Tech). And I run in big circles a lot.

I too remember the earlier, woke wars. tons of spent microaggression munitions strewn about everywhere, friends crying out for God as they were slowly cancelled...look, if you weren't there, you'll never understand

One of my go-tos: "If no one's responsible for that task, that's exactly who does it"

So much of data management (and a lot of other task-oriented stuff) is just roles and responsibilities

Super useful research advice from our friends @ TLOS for my skeptic view of all things AI:

-Consider portions of research workflow that you understand well and can scrutinize what an AI tool/agent is output
-Ask AI tool/agent to output an object that could be integrated into existing workflows

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers.

The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

When people have asked me about thoughts on AI & qualitative data, this has been at the top of my list. Sobering to see proof of concept.
Lots of research needed on what (de-identified?) human subject data we can still publish under which conditions.

Steps backwards IMO...certainly not going to help proposal writers budget appropriately for these activities, nor be in good position to actually share data when it's time (esp human participants data)

The hidden ICE blueprint that should horrify every American | Will Bunch An internal Department of Homeland Security document shows how ICE plans to cram thousands of detained human beings inside a Georgia warehouse.

What's more shocking than ICE's plan to cram as many 8,500 humans into massive, soul-crushing warehouses?

Seeing the actual DHS floor plan that echoes slavery ships and history's worst gulags with no rec space but a gun range for guards

Continuity and Change in Trust in Scientists in the United States: Demographic Stability and Partisan Polarization Abstract. Americans’ trust in scientists has been stable and high, relative to other political and social institutions, for the last half century (Krause,

It's not some marginal boring task you can skip. It's the heart of it.

Trump's Climate Supercomputer Plans Threaten US Insurance Market: Actuaries A new letter from the American Academy of Actuaries draws a direct line between the planned dismantling of NCAR and higher homeowners insurance costs for US consumers.

The American Academy of Actuaries warns that dismantling NCAR would degrade the catastrophe models insurers depend on to price climate riskβ€”driving up premiums and threatening coverage availability nationwide.

So we've been using an Al agent since November to
answer leadership questions about metrics. It seemed
amazing at first fast answers, detailed explanations,
everyone loved it.
I just found out it's been hallucinating numbers this
entire time.
Our VP of sales made territory decisions based on
data that didn't exist. Our CFO showed the board a
deck with fake insights. The Al was just inventing
plausible sounding percentages.
I only caught it by accident when someone asked me
to double check something. I started digging, and
holy shit, it's bad.

I feel this way about pretty much all vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. You shouldn't be allowed to dump cyanide into municipal drinking water and you shouldn't be allowed to recreationally spread viruses around shared public spaces.

State of Open Data Survey 2025 additional resources Anonymised raw data and questionnaire for the 2025 State of Open Data survey developed between Springer Nature, Figshare and Digital Science. The annual survey looks to understand attitudes and behaviours of research authors to the sharing, reuse and redistribution of openly available data.

I found it on p. 31 of the report!

"Survey questions and data from 2025 are available on Figshare"

Interesting work, thanks for sharing! Looking at a time series of model output (or maybe reanalysis data too) could show changes in temp profiles, makes good sense

I guess TWC starting to name winter storms might help with the record keeping, after I joined everyone in laughing about that....

Is there also a known relationship between increasing ice/freezing rain with winter storms and a warming climate, esp on the East Coast?

Warmer air aloft leads to less snow, more ice and sleet, after all

Something we've been speculating here in SW VA while stuck without public school...

I agree. Working on a new report on this right now. What happened in Atlanta today is significantly worse than it even appears on the surface. I daresay I no longer hold out much hope that this fall will be anything but utterβ€”and scaryβ€”chaos.

A free and fair election increasingly feels unthinkable.

I picked a hell of a week to visit Europe, and Switzerland, at that.l I’ve spent three days at an international gathering, and, Americans: everybody else is deep into planning a post-US world. We are only worth considering as an opponent. New alliances are being formed. We are being left behind.
