The US sank an Iranian warship and didn’t rescue the survivors. Is this legal in war? These rules have developed over centuries as states sought to regulate the conduct of conflict at sea while still allowing navies to operate effectively.

I think conversations about the legality of this attack have a place (theconversation.com/the-us-sank-...) but there is also something remarkably tautological about it: the US attacks Iran, therefore it is in armed conflict, and can sink whatever target it wants...

The extensions of that become perverse. Imagine if Iran launched a ballistic missile at Israel and then, because armed conflict had commenced, targeted and killed a bunch of Israeli military reservists because they were suddenly combatants? Surely it would be labeled barbaric terrorism, no?
