Anyhow, as of now Squardle v2.002 is live, where 🔲 will replace ⬜ in the share emoji going forward.
Everyone who's answered me on multiple platforms sees the new square in the same size as the other colors. Hopefully the border around the new white square won't be reported as a bug on twitter now.
Given how little it matters that a square is white or black in the share emoji it sort of makes sense that no one reported the bug for several years. Long enough for a new social media platform that has a different emoji font to make it onto the scene so that the fixing of the bug now causes issues.
The white emoji squares were in the game from the start. See x.com/MangMatt/sta... for example.
But it looks like I early on introduced a bug that made the white emoji squares black. Squardle Distance added new emoji colors, so in that update I cleaned up the code and apparently also fixed the bug.
Of course, if the emoji "White Large Square" should align in size with "Red Large Square" for the full emoji or just for the square but not their outline is a matter of taste.
I totally understand that the use case of "Wordle-like results" might not be top prio for the Unicode Consortium.
Still...
I just made a post asking the same question about what emoji lines up on people's screens on both twitter and bsky (not as a reply).
This seems to be one of the rare instances of where twitter has an edge on bsky by having its own emoji font that it uses across apps.

I'm guessing it doesn't look like that screenshot for you and the rows of 5 squares get different width? Or does it look like the screenshot and the fact that the black border on the white squares makes those squares slightly bigger (while still aligned in the grid) enough to annoy you?
Wait, I just re-read your message in context. Are you talking about the emoji squares? Because I *have* seen some devices/apps/browsers now have differently sized emoji for one of the squares making things look un-aligned. I'm guessing you're seeing an emoji-font that doesn't line up?
The settings page is already longer than most players want to read through, so I'd rather not make any new setting. But it *might* be possible to have it re-hide the hints that have the setting for auto-hide turned on. (Without hiding hints that were manually hidden, or fading anything.)
There was a bug where going back to look at a previous result for a daily or weekly board would sometimes get confused fade/hide the wrong hints. Displaying every hint at the end was the easy fix. It also made the end screen have all the info needed to recreate all guessed words if you shared it.

I fully endorse this nonsense, but I wouldn't recommend you try it yourself unless you have a high tolerance for information overload.

It has two new game modes, as well as a few new quality of life features. The new modes are "Squardle 34" and "Squardle Distance 34". Both use a new 34-square board layout, but the latter also completely changes how the hints function!

Hotfix now live! Refreshing the game page should now allow you to load Weekly Squardle #184. If you have cache issues, add ?4711 (or ?whatever ) to the end of the URL to make your browser actually load from the server instead of from your cache.
I'm aware that the Weekly Squardle isn't loading. I have a hot fix ready, but my internet went down about an hour ago. So I'm having a hard time pushing it live. I might have to fix this from my laptop as it can probably connect from my phone as a hotspot. But my hotfix isn't on my laptop... *sigh*

Text next to the screenshot: If you’re playing on a device with a physical keyboard, it’s a bit too easy to not pay attention to the on-screen keyboard and thus type in a letter that’s already black or dark gray there. This leads to feel bad moments. Also, “Can you avoid pressing the letters that are marked on the keyboard?” isn’t supposed to be the skill-testing part of playing Squardle. For this reason the next big update will include a feature that also temporarily darkens the squares on the board where you’ve typed in black or dark gray letters. Note that you can of course still guess words with those letters. If you dislike this change, it will be optional. So it can be turned off in the settings.

The inner squares form a 4x4 magic square but using the start and end letters of 5-letter words as the word list. 4x4 boards are already easier to find, and the list of allowed answers for this 4x4 is bigger than the list for Squardle XS.
Then the outer 4 words only have to match 3 squares each.
Given how rare 5x5 double magic word squares (aka "Weekly Squardle boards") are, I was a bit surprised that there were plenty of valid boards for this bigger board type. Thinking about it a bit more it's not that odd though...
The board for "Squardle 34", (the other mode that's currently being tested by my awesome Patreon supporters), came about because Squardle Distance made me examine if there were some way to make a bigger board what still used 5-letter words.

Wordle-like players are much more trained in guessing words with exactly 5 letters, so I also didn't want to force players to guess 6- or 7-letter words while playing the new mode. The new type of hints already added enough complexity.
I've been wanting to try out this sort of hints for quite a while now, but early pen and paper playtesting showed that for it to be fun it required a larger grid than 5x5 squares, and it worked better if that board also didn't have lots of holes in it.

Another new game mode just entered the Patreon supporter Beta: Squardle Distance 34!
It completely changes how hints work in Squardle. Instead of getting info about rows and columns for your guessed letters you now get to know how far away from where they should go you've guessed them.
