AuDHDers: tired of burning out trying to make self-employment work?
A lot of solopreneur advice assumes people work in the same way, but Autistic and AuDHD founders have totally different strengths and challenges.
I'm launching a new course soon: Work for Yourself Without Burning Out

The story we've been told about autism is incomplete. π I'm available for media appearances and interviews to talk about what autism actually looks like in adults β and what a world that genuinely includes and values autistic people could look like. Let's have a real conversation.

I can still be completely honest and entirely myself, and also notice how I come across to others, what will affect them, and what they need to be okay right now.

My hang-up is because I donβt actually feel like I need my writing and videos to be βjust rightβ. Where I get stuck is closer to a feeling that if I donβt say exactly what I mean, people will misunderstand me, and therefore something bad will happen.
I explain this more here: buff.ly/y48kK0i
There are some aspects of perfectionism that definitely relate to my own experiences, but since there are some that donβt, I keep pondering whether Iβm really a perfectionist or not.
Iβve been thinking lately about my own relationship with perfectionism, especially in relation to writing articles and making videos. 1/3

Which basically means that, if that is the case (and itβs not always the case, of course), most of the world is being supported by someone else. Which by definition means itβs okay and normal to get support. To not be able to do it all on your own.
Within the traditional family values framework, generally one person works and one person takes care of all of the domestic duties. 1/2

Or we believe that lie ourselves, and we blame ourselves for not βmaking better choicesβ.
Many aspects of our lives are shaped by strong social pressures, happenstance, luck, and (mis)fortune, that donβt necessarily reflect our actual preferences, yet itβs common that other people assume thatβs what we wanted. 1/2

Getting out of burnout isnβt just getting some energy, getting a little motivation and then doing stuff the same way again. Itβs doing things in a different way, so that you donβt go into burnout again.

You deserve to have the capacity for having a life, for being able to engage with special interests, with friends, with family, with activities, with just resting, with whatever it is that makes you come alive.

Labeling it "not a big deal" was a way for them to get off the hook of having to deal with what was really going on.

When I was a kid and complained the ice cream was cold, they laughed at me. When I fought my mom putting on tights, she would get exasperated. When I "went into a sulk" over a change of plans, they said it wasn't a big deal and I should just get over it.

So things tend to be sorted into an all or a nothing, especially when Iβm stressed. And one of my biggest revelations was, itβs not all or nothing.
My brain finds that itβs hard to predict a lot of the world and a lot of people. And so I tend to find comfort in trying to make things into absolutes. 1/2

Many Autistics and many ADHDers need more rest for our nervous systems to be able to process the sensory information that weβre taking in, the social information weβre taking in, to be able to regulate, and to really actually feel rested.

I spent years feeling like my body was overreacting to things others brushed off.
It made more sense when I realised most of my rules about what is and is not 'safe' were written in childhood. Of course that stuff is still affecting you. That is when you learned what safe felt like.
Sometimes it might be difficult to figure out whether itβs actually a negative thought or the practicalities of the situation, especially as some of these negative thoughts feel really true, and youβre so used to thinking them that itβs hard to tell.
