there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

My pet hypothesis is that COVID brain fucks up both risk assessment and cutting people slack, so drivers tend to both do more stupid shit and lay more blame on anybody who might be affected.
I honestly enjoyed reading it, most of the time. Wasn't until I started trying to read it aloud to my kid that I realized there were more problems with the basics of the prose than I'd noticed. (We very much DNF that project.)
Wow, I thought we were the only ones who called it that! Live and learn.
Talk to your neighbors, they said. Forge connections, they said. Sounded great at the time...

Elon Musk has already started plans to launch a million satellites.
Yes. A MILLION.
This is a colossally bad idea, and it's not too late to make your voice heard. I explain everything:

when you and a friend send each other a link to the same meme or news story on two different chat platforms simultaneously that counts as a digital jinx
Seeing a lotta people like βno Firefly sucked actuallyβ and hard disagree; I really like Firefly, I have a huge amount of lingering affection for it, I think a lot of it is quite solid and it has some truly great moments, and also itβs good that itβs over and it should stay that way
Heads up: Indexing by @seananmcguire.bsky.social is on US Kindle sale for $2.50; as is usually the case when I see it at that price, I have acquired some for random giveaway.
Optical illusion of a woman bent over some papers. Her sunglasses are pushed up and she is wearing a hair band so the top of her head looks exactly like a Muppet face
Sorry I know the world is in a terrible fix but I've been laughing at this for ten minutes now
I was hoping someone would make this joke.
Medical org: hi, you owe us $100

...Every. Goddamn. Time.
Probably both. Also the wild level of difference in what people consider "good/bad."
"But that's not what the whole article--" Yeah then they shouldn't have 1) implied it was, nor 2) required that I go into the bar to definitively find out. At best it's sloppy construction that should stay rough draft, at worst it's ragebaiting to angle for subscriptions.
So, so hard to resist the urge to subskeet today.
I'll just say that anyone who won't do the work of walking out of the Nazi bar, and makes you come in to hear them tell oppressed people their facts are hurting privileged white feelings, is not someone to repost.
And the company's desperation means we get to crash from a high-stakes fiery Star Trek cliffhanger to the zero of some chick singing "Feh-BREEZE" at every possible commercial break, and if we have to have ads that's the only way to do it
I had the chance to work with an award-winning SF novelist on my senior thesis and ghosted him because he dismissed Babylon 5 out of hand. Turns out I may have dodged a bullet: his name appears in the Epstein files.
An intricate octopus cut from a single piece of paper
Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as βcut pictureβ), the art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and then contrasting it against a black background to reveal the design.
Naan for me but same energy.
Me: ow, please not an eyelash, I literally just woke up
My eye: what eyelash, I'm just being super fabulously red
Me: oh CHRIST
My eye: ok not THAT red
Me: quit fucking around, I can't tell if you're actually itchy
My eye: me either
Me: you're gonna decide at 8pm aren't you
My eye: ...maybe
A street sign reading "Dick Place"
Went to the place where everyone knows your name, bro

A white woman in a dark gray suit, standing in front of a work desk with a laptop, printer, and lamp in front of a curtained window
Found it! I thought I had an angle where the bun was visible but apparently not.
I tried to cosplay her once. Nobody got it.
A gothic castle in the transylvanian mountains. A great bear of a man, waring a stovepipe hat and carrying a cane: "Now that you are my bride, you will never leave this castle!" His new bride replies "Wow! Your library is amazing!" He continues "Beyond the castle is a high wall with no gate, and beyond that is a deep. Dark forest with no path." She pulls a volume from a great bookcase, "I suppose it's my library too, now we're married." He goes on "The forest is crawling with ravenous wolves, malignant birds and the spirits of long-dead travellers." Ignoring him, carrying a pile of hardbacks "So many books! I can't believe My luck!" He has sprouted wings, claws and cloven hoofs. "When the sun sets, I transform into a wild beast and soar into the night, seized by a terrible bloodlust!" She sits, examining her books as he flies out the window "Ok. I'll stay here and read. See you in the morning"
