Demonschool does this... kinda! Our backgrounds ARE full 3D, but for most of the overworld gameplay, we have a fixed camera angle... if there are no moving lights, we can cache the world to a texture and treat the whole world as an impostor, essentially doing runtime 'pre-rendering' i guess.

In case it wasn't clear, the game in question is Twinkle Star Sprites: a game that I randomly found at my local import game shop for Sega Saturn in the 90s. Heck of a game.
