With the week-end nearly upon us, I thought that a seaside view might be appropriate. This is "Broadstairs" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1931. It was on a short-list of two images by him that were under consideration for a Shell poster design: North Foreland Lighthouse was the choice. #ElwinHawthorne

This is "From an East End Window" by Henry Silk from 1931. Henry rented a room from his sister, Ellen Hawthorn (Elwin's mother) at their family home at 11, Rounton Road in Bow & this was the view from Henry's bedroom window. #HenrySilk #EastLondonGroup

Ah, how interesting @lakesstiles.bsky.social & thank you. I often think that a good watercolour outplays an oil: much more spontaneity. Here's "The River Deben near Waldringfield" also by Walter Steggles from 1934 which is also in the sale at Dreweatts www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auctio...

Good morning @lakesstiles.bsky.social & thank you. Yes, Walter Steggles certainly did have a way with clouds! Here's another example of it which is also in the sale at Dreweatts in Newbury a week today. This is "Wharfedale" which I believe he painted in the 1970s www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auctio...

Today is the 83rd anniversary of the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster so here's "Bethnal Green Tube Station" by Albert Turpin from the mid to late 1950s. Albert was Mayor of Bethnal Green in 1946 & I believe that this was his tribute to 173 poor souls who lost their lives that night. #LestWeForget

This is a wood-block print of "Broadstairs" by Elwin Hawthorne from c.1931. When I first showed it online it was untitled but, after a while a follower identified it as being a view of Broadstairs which, once one knows that, is instantly recognisable! #ElwinHawthorne #Broadstairs

After a few days away in London & a rather "trying" journey home it has taken me a while to "come to" this #SundayMorning, I'm sorry to say! Here's our "usual" start to the day: "Sunday Morning, Farringdon Road" by Cecil Osborne from 1929. It is in the collection at Brighton & Hove Museums

It is the last #SaturdayMorning of February so here's our "usual" start to the day & week-end: "Interior" by Brynhild Parker from 1930. It was once owned by an avid collector of ELG work, Sir David Scott, who had 16 or 17 pieces in his collection #BrynhildParker #EastLondonGroup

This one is a great favourite of mine. It was painted by Walter Steggles from the rear of the Steggles' family home at 94, Heath Road, Chadwell Heath in either 1923 or 1925. This is "Railway Sidings". #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

This is "Coborn Street, Bow" by Harold Steggles from 1931. The view was taken from the school yard where some of the evening art classes were held, behind the black gates that one can see in the Street View image. Harold would still recognise the view as one can see in my photo. #HaroldSteggles

This one is an intriguing piece which only came to light by chance when I stumbled across it online in a holiday let advert! This is "The Clarke & Eaton Glass & Mirror Showroom" by Archibald Hattemore from the early to mid 1930s. Arch went there to prepare a quote for flooring!! #ArchibaldHattemore

The Burlington Magazine is the world's leading monthly publication devoted to the fine and decorative arts.
My pleasure, Allison @studiousgal.bsky.social & yes, England is my team. How interesting to hear that you studied under Professor Bruce Laughton: one of his tutors at Camberwell was William Coldstream who was a member of the ELG! More here: www.burlington.org.uk/archive/obit... by Wendy Baron

That is most kind @lakesstiles.bsky.social As you say, there's a lot to be gained from +ve engagement on social media. Over the years that I've been active online, an extraordinary amount of information has come back to me via interaction on our various accounts: like having one's own research team!

Good morning, Allison @studiousgal.bsky.social & how interesting, thank you. As you may have gathered, "Six Nations" on our side of "the pond" refers to a series of Rugby Union matches played between England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France & Italy over several weekends through February & March

Good morning @lakesstiles.bsky.social & thank you. What interesting looking buildings. There's not much in the way of art deco representation in ELG work but, in the background of this one, there's the Odeon cinema, Richmond (built in 1930). This is "Richmond Bridge" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1932.

Another rather dreary #SaturdayMorning has arrived so, with any luck, this lovely, bright painting of "Interior" by Brynhild Parker might help to brighten the start to the day. The painting dates from 1930. #BrynhildParker #EastLondonGroup

Here's another one that hasn't seen the light of day recently. This is "Essex Farmhouse" by Harold Steggles from 1933. Interestingly, it was incorrectly catalogued in the exhibition at Lefevre in that year as "Sussex Farmhouse": presumably, just a simple typo. #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

This is "Knaresborough" by Phyllis Bray from 1931. Phyllis' new husband (they were married in 1931), John Cooper's family home was at Menston in Yorkshire just under 20 miles from Knaresborough & the both painted not dissimilar views of the town at that time. #PhyllisBray #EastLondonGroup
