And a lot of inverter ACs are also bidirectional heat pumps, which means they also provide heating, which is kind of an "inverted AC". And so, people (justifiably) think that "inverter" mean that, but it doesn't! But now you are also cursed with this knowledge, you're welcome.
But very (mildly) annoyingly, the appliances which most benefit from this inverter technology are fridges and ACs (air conditioners this time, other AC). And a lot of inverter fridges also, as I said COMPLETELY UNRELATEDLY, have the freezer on the bottom, thus being kind of an "inverted fridge".
And this makes it so the motor in the compressor can work at a variable speed. That second conversion, from DC back to AC, in electrical engineering, is done by a circuit called [drum roll] an ~inverter~!
[in a Technology Connections voice] You see, "inverter", in this context, means that this appliance, which uses a compressor in its refrigeration cycle, converts mains energy which is AC (alternating current), into DC, and then back again into variable frequency AC.
If I had a nickel for every type of home appliance (that I know of) that incorporates a technology called "inverter" and also, completely unrelatedly, usually invert some aspect of their normal functions (causing some amount of confusion in the process) I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot etc etc
