I’m very, very disappointed to see @gamingalexandria.bsky.social , one of the foremost organizations for preserving game history, promoting the use of AI translation and using patreon funds to pay for AI licenses.

I have cancelled my patreon membership and will no longer promote the organization.

I think it’s pretty reasonable to use machine translations as a first step to scout material to then translate. But publishing machine translations, even with that caveat, removes too much friction and creates a false impression for readers with less knowledge that they can take it at face value.

The problem isn’t that this is a job for humans being replaced by AI; the problem is that this work should not be done if the only way is with AI.

It’s worthless and destructive: these translations are like looking at history through a clownhouse mirror
