Animal Stories Across The World… The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd in Glenmore, Highlands of Scotland – RingSide Report

Andi recently did an interview with Ringside Report about the reindeer herd, which has just been published. Apologies - I can't get the link to show a pretty picture, but we assure you there are reindeer photos along with the article!

Three year old Popsicle is very distinctive as her antlers are squint at the base - she got a bop on the head from another reindeer as a youngster, which shifted the 'pedicle' for her right hand antler lower (the pedicle is the specialised part of the skull where the antlers grow from).

A wee bit later than usual but you can now enjoy our February photo blog! This month has been a bit gusty so you can expect a few windswept Reindeer and Herders.

Now the February half-term is over, the reindeer in the Paddocks at the Centre are heading back up on to the mountains. For the next few weeks the Hill Trip will be the only way to see the herd, though the Exhibition will remain open at the Centre.😊

Here's old girl Ryvita leading the herd! 🤩

It's been a fairly snowy winter compared to some so far, particularly higher up on the hills. Whilst us humans aren't very well adapted for a life in snow, luckily the reindeer are! www.cairngormreindeer.co.uk/2026/02/20/p...

Fetching the reindeer yesterday morning! 💭

Much like the rest of the UK, the Cairngorms haven't seen much sun yet this year! We have spent lots of time walking around in the clouds, but there is something pretty magical about this monochrome landscape! 🤩

Here’s a blog all about the lovely Chickpea. She'll turn six years old in the spring and after a rather unusual first few years to life has grown into a beautiful lass and excellent mother. Read all about her story here...

Sunflower enjoying some sunshine this week! 🌞🌻

It has been WONDERFUL to have some sunshine over the last couple of days. Don't be fooled though, in the Cairngorm wind it is still bitterly cold. 🥶

Oro is one of the shier calves, but he is super sweet. He's easy to spot due to his distinctive white tuft of hair between his antlers!

Today's reindeer feed was a BREEZY one! 💨

Can you see their beards blowing and how much they are all leaning into the wind? As always, it's amazing to see how capable the reindeer are in really challenging conditions. 💪

The effects of wind 💨
These photos were taken only about 250m apart and illustrate nicely just what the wind does in winter - scour some areas clear of snow whilst dumping huge amounts in other spots. Here's Twist, Turtle, Glacee and Ceilidh very sensibly sticking to a clear patch to graze!

It was lovely to catch up with Scoop whilst he is out free ranging in the hills the other day, despite it being very dreich! He learnt how to pull a sleigh and attended several Christmas events in December making us all very proud. Now he's having a well-deserved break, enjoying the peace and quiet.

A busman’s holiday – AKA the delight of bumping into reindeer on your day off - The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd Now we're in the middle of winter, it's hard to imagine the hills in summer time. But I found these photos on my phone from a day off in August and thought I would share them in a blog. I was off for ...

The hills are very wild today with wind & snow (sadly just rain in the glen) but this week's blog transports us back to a summer's day. Lotti bumped into some of the free rangers whilst on a walk last August - she shares her busman's holiday with us! ☀️

Our calves are now eight months old. Some of them are super independent, but some like Salsa and Foxtrot here are still at their mum's side! 🤩

Here we have Sundae, Salsa, Foxtrot, Morris and Hopscotch.

Happy Weekend from the lovely Peanut! 🎉

Peanut doesn't get featured very often on our social media despite being such a lovely lass. She's quite shy so often found at the back of the group behind some of the greedier, bossier reindeer. Peanut is mum to Nuii, Kuksa and Polka. 🥜

The lovely Darling out in the snow last week! 🤩

Reindeer are perfectly adapted to life in the snow, their coat is so insulative that the snow doesn't melt on their backs. Instead it forms an extra layer of insulation on top of their coats! ❄

After an excursion up the hill to see if we could locate any reindeer it was too windy💨 to go any further, so we gave up and staggered back to the Centre. The reindeer will be loving life out in the hills, totally at home in their mountain environment. Unlike us humans, try as we might.

Orinoco & Mississippi were born in 2023 and as young cows they've spent the majority of the year free ranging in the hills. They're in great condition with lovely antlers! 🤩 They're now spending the last week of 2025 in the hill enclosure, taking their turn to meet & greet our Hill Trip visitors.
