[March 4, 1971] Shuffling Back and Forth (British Comics Roundup) I thought it was a good time to get the lay of the land. Whilst some comics have carried on as usual, many others have seen major changes.

I decided to write about some of my favourite British comics of the early 70s:

This one was SUPER FUN to write.

I have trouble not spilling tea on myself whilst sitting down. Respect!

There are some people that don't ponder daily if the Sea Peoples were causal or merely the result of the bronze age collapse? Sounds fakey!

May seem an odd choice but I say Rob Brydon, because I think could put darkness hiding behind a happy go lucky exterior really well.

Yes, ylrhat is the thing with megastructures. Most of them probably don't make sense purely based on the knowledge gleaned in the book but they are advanced alien tech beyond human comprehension. Don't need to see the numbers.

Oh yes, very mediocre.
I recall reading somewhere (maybe in an intro?) that the main reason Niven wrote it was that someone had pointed out Ringworld was not technologically feasible and would collapse, so he wanted to deal with that issue.
If true seems a silly reason for a whole novel.

The one good cop who comes to town full of bright hope.

The kindly father figure who we discover has a darkness beneath the veil.

The diner/cafe that serves darn good coffee.

I could even see Finn having been a Bob host.

Darn I never thought of it before but you could so easily combine the two universes together. Some of the characters even feel like they could be direct parallels.

This.

We need to ditch any whiff of Great Man quick smart. No one person is the movement! It doesn't matter who that person is. They're going to come after him, but they're really coming after *us*

Keep focus. We can bloody do this. We are so many more than them.

[February 24, 1971] Under and down: The Second Pacific Book of Science Fiction - Galactic Journey By Mx Kris Vyas-Myall I had originally only been planning to review one anthology this week. However, noting my dismay at the loss of Vision of Tomorrow, one of my friends recommended I get hold of a ...

And here is my third and final anthology review of the month, the disappointing Second Pacific Book of Science Fiction:

Facebook just told me it's been a year to the day since my book came out. If you haven't bought it yet, don't you think you've held back long enough?

I half expect next Series to include a flashback to Ser Arlan saying "you think I can't read by I know Das Kapital by heart" and Egg organising strikes.

The final episode of King of the 7 Kingdoms definitely moved the class critique from thinly vieled subtext to 6ft neon letters.
You have Dunc saying if rulers are privileged they are shit & a break in the usual classical music to play Sixteen Tons, a song about being a coal miner for a corporation.

[February 22, 1971] Science Against Man - Galactic Journey I turned to a couple of anthologies, one that was heavily British and in the high brow spirit, the other entirely Australian & more old fashioned.

The second of my three anthology reviews for this month, the surprisingly impressive Science Against Man:

I still sometimes wonder if his entire premiership is actually some kind of conceptual art piece.
How many people can you annoy and still stay in charge?

22.02.2026 13:32 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I do continue to find it amazing just how bad he is at just politics or people, and this is from someone who has the charisma of a potato.
I consider myself plugged in but even when he actually does good things I keep finding out in random ways.
How can he manage to annoy everyone?

I mean only the fake god tried in Owl House, the true God just established that it is okay to melt the skins off nazis and curb-stomp their bones. Important lesson for all children!

(Personally Lib Dems are further down my list because I am still not convinced after 2010 they wouldn't sell out the entire country to fascism for a whiff of power, but appreciate others don't hold to that).

Whilst I know people don't fully act like this in reality, it is heartening to see a heirarchy of preference among British voters of:
Lib Dem > Green> Labour > Conservative > Reform

Thinking more about it, I wonder if it would work well as movie. Giving us a more ground level entry point to Mega City One?
Like Furiosa, make it:
"America: A Dredd Story"
Just a musing.
