I’m learning in doing these demonstration videos that you’re gonna really, really need to know when to call it quits. I get pretty damn beat up even when I’m winning, so if you’re losing a battle you gotta book it before you hit 50 health and slow down. Dodging is very hard!

Tomorrow I’ll be putting out another demonstration video. Got myself killed in a dry run. A difficult advance across open ground. I’ll be showing off Hexen’s Dark Magic and Moon Phase mechanics, as well as being sure to actually use Faction Abilities.

The Cyberdemon’s Menus are done! That’s one down, fifteen to go, but now I have a functioning template to go off of so the rest will be a little quicker.

This weekend you can expect two things: A demo update including a crudely rigged up map so it’s actually possible to play (only downloadable in the Discord: discord.gg/JKSdJAS7), and a new demonstration video of Hexen besieging Heretic with some upgrades on display. It’ll be a good weekend!
VICTORY. I got a hold of another computer (a ThinkPad I got cheap, my first Linux computer as well) and confirmed the game does in fact function online without desyncing or whatever. Not a STRESS test, mind you, just that things fight and menus work, etc.
Doom has its Bruiser count and max, Heretic it’s faction ability charges, Hexen dark magic and the moon phase, Chex Quest it’s Goop Mass, and Virus it’s Prismatic Energy number. Whew!🧵End
Got so much HUD shit to track. Health, armor, mana, favor, cap points, generator count, summoner portrait and price, faction abilities. then specific faction stuff.🧵
Still one of my fave features. REALLY important with Heroes, but it finds use among more than a few units with AOE abilities.

Got a lot done today. GLDEFs are now FINISHED and I implemented a flag required to avoid some unpleasantness on every single projectile in the game. Also added an upper elevation limit to air units that can be broken only if the target is higher than them. Keeps them from being too hard to hit.

A member of the ZDW2 community reached out and, during a conversation, confessed to making a Duke Nukem faction for the original ZDWars. I was well known for biting people’s heads off for requesting a Duke faction (It’s not Doom! Not interested!), so it was hilarious to me. I’m chiller now, I swear!
Right! I mean despite all the new mechanics, the moment to moment gameplay is SUPER recognizable. All the core stuff is there!

But to me, it’s an unbroken chain from the ambitions of the original to the reality of the sequel. It’s the game I always wanted to make and didn’t have the means to do so before. It’s nuanced and complex and yet really snappy and fast-paced once you’ve got a good idea of the whole in your head.🧵
I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but I’ve found I don’t really care what the meta was in ZDW1. This is a complete reimagining from the ground up. I got some flak from one particular community for calling it ZDW2 if it’s so different.🧵
It’s gonna be awesome. Will it be wide appeal? Fuck no. It’s dense and frantic and requires a lot of knowledge. It’s got tutorials AND a manual. It’s just not easy, but it WILL be very fun for anyone who engages with it. Join the Discord! Taking map submissions!

I’m in a really lucky position where I have the means to make something I really wanna make. My main drive in this game (and what was my brother’s drive for it) is that I’m making it for me. I know it’s gonna be weird niche nerd shit and I’m fine with that.🧵
