Wait β¦. This is a real post?
I have teacher survivor guilt. I retired after 35 years as a public school teacher two years ago. Now my friends on the front lines are talking about the effect of the ICE raids in the Central Valley on their students. I should be there (Iβm grateful not to be there). God help us. Again.
Iβll look into it! Thanks.
The website DysgraphiaLife is a rich resource pare both parents and teachers.
Sounds amazing - and as someone who works with dyslexic kids, love to see that quote!
Iβm always fascinated by kids who remember learning to read! I have vague kindergarten memories of something like Dick and Jane. And then yeah, exposing kids to ALL kinds of books to open their world is so important.
Looking forward to them! I work with reading teachers and more and more come to me with a more rounded view of reading than even two years ago so Iβm hopeful. Hope we can get sweeping change in training programs some how.
May I be added please?
My first wondering are about what brain imaging shows in the minds of deaf readers when they see a word compared to hearing readers.
How do you suggest we avoid getting burned by oversimplification of the issues now that politicians and parents are paying attention? I donβt think laws against 3 cueing, while well-intentioned, will do the trick. How do we get the real work of training new teachers done?
Looking through @timrasinski.bsky.social βs book on fluency (not a βreseaerch bookβ but solidly based on it and so useful).
I agree. Iβm struggling with how to help teachers understand their errors when they truly thought they saw progress. It wasnβt uncommon for kids to appear to be beginning readers at the end of 1st, only to fail a few years later. And when itβs part of your identity, itβs a bitter pill indeed.
As someone who talks about reading instruction on social media, itβs distressing to see that the simplification there has translated into a belief that some simple practices will fix everything. It must start in teacher training but where are the leaders and how do we accomplish that?
Love this time of year for fluency work with Readerβs Theater. I have a small group of 4/5th working on a simple script weβve created from a chapter in Holes. Theyβre engaged! #readingteacher #edusky
Sure would make things easier. Glad it worked out!
Post election I expect a huge homeschooling increase. Please teach your kids to read! There are great programs for homeschool families. Check out Logic of English by Eide and All About Reading! Both evidence-based and parent-friendly. #homeschool #edusky
Iβd love an add please! OG tutor, virtual reading teacher, retired from decades in the classroom.
Hi! Iβm a reading teacher and have coached homeschool families for about a decade after work in classrooms. Iβd love an add!
Thatβs exciting! Congratulations!
Post by Jamie Selzer: Michelle Obama: βOur food environment isnβt healthy and we should explore some changesβ Republicans: βYouβre a communist taking our freedom!β RFK Jr: βLiterally anything added to food is poisonβ Republicans: βAgreed! I demand you make all my food choices for me!β
Well, this gets it exactly right, doesnβt it?
I loved teaching young kids for decades but eventually being in a classroom wasnβt the right fit. Now I teach kids to read online as a certified Orton Gillingham tutor. Iβve fallen in love with this job! Maybe you arenβt done with teaching, maybe youβre just done with classroom teaching. #edusky
Super grateful no one has asked me to break that one down before!
Parents not reading to their children is not the cause of the literacy crisis. The number of schools not teaching explicit phonics is what leads to the fourth grade crash, where kids who previously seemed able to read suddenly cannot decode multisyllabic words. #scienceofreading
Thanks. What a beautiful thing.
Itβs a shame, because it simply creates a rush to sell a new product. As we know, the science is always growing and shifting, and leaving it to politicians to determine what makes a good reading program is unwise.
Lucy Calkins is deliberately being obtuse. She says everyone knows you teach phonics in K-1. Really? Not if you were trained in her curriculum. True, phonics has been added. My understanding is that it isnβt appropriately sequential or particularly thorough.
A friend of my daughter said they want to be a math teacher and the panic I felt. Please Lord, no.
And thatβs how a teacher who LOVED teaching pre-Covid feels about it now.
