Some body horror for the new year! So excited about my nonfiction choose your own adventure piece, winner of the Ned Stuckey-French nonfiction prize and recently published by @southeastreview.bsky.social! This piece is an excerpt of a full-length choose your own adventure book in progress.

The first time I ran my game Passing with strangers, I brought it to a convention. A group of older white men (who knew each other) sat down and within 20 minutes used the 1950’s setting as an opportunity to make racist jokes. I X-carded them multiple times and ended up cutting the game short

It involved interactive performance, puzzle design, narrative writing, props and more! Really excited to be working with the new generation of game designers and educators.

So proud of my students! This quarter I’ve been teaching a freshman and sophomore-focused class about games and education. The class has been split in half and each half has been making an educational alternate reality game for the other. Last week they each presented Act one of their game.

Got to spend some time this week playing a bisexual disaster in The Slow Knife. It’s a prompt-based TTRPG in which you play the villains of a revenge story, a la The Count of Monte Cristo. I was really impressed by the game—how thorough and intricate the prompt system was. #ttrpg #rpg #gamedesign

Is it the most niche game on the face of the planet? Yes
Am I fine-tuning the language of every prompt and the nuances of each mechanic? Also, yes

This is too real. A few months ago I was like, I’m stressed about teaching, what if I make a silly goofy game about being an adjunct professor just 4 me.

I have playtested it now multiple times and put it through rigorous rounds of edits.
