Anis Bawarshi, this year's #4C26 exemplar award winner says that "If I am an exemplar, it is only because of my exemplars"
Ring is a wildly dangerous company. Always has been. But it has sort of flown under the radar the last couple years as it tried to soften its image. Make no mistake that this is an extremely dangerous surveillance dragnet:

Lag. The federal judiciary is catching up β this is a remarkable order, it's only three pages. I recommend reading it. I have, in all of my time practicing law, never seen a judge do anything like this:
I wrote about my experiences being sexually exploited as a child, and what we need to do to make sure AI doesnβt make that a reality for millions of children.

None of my to-do list items include scrolling the feed but I am nonetheless finding it difficult to ignore Events.
I had to send an email to my kid's teacher. Thankfully they weren't having the kids interact with it directly but I was still furious
The park service removed the two official federal holidays that honor Black history from its 2026 list of free entrance days, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenthβand added President Trump's birthday.

For lots of reasons, I donβt like LLMs and I donβt use them, but I know there are serious people working on ways to meaningfully incorporate them into education and I donβt doubt there are ways to do that productively. Itβs probably obvious that βHave the LLM tell you the answerβ isnβt one of them.

If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.
The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.
I have never read The Power Broker, and I know almost nothing about Robert Moses, but I am thoroughly enjoying listening through @99pi.org's series of breakdown episodes
Thinking of putting together a panel about parents in academia for next year's 4Cs in which each presenter just cries for 10-15 min. Plus a respondent cryer. #4C26
Thank you for coming!
I've actually been kind of shocked by the lack of consensus surrounding the ethics of generative ai among folks at #4C25...
New Buying Power: I wrote about how America built the postwar world order and its own society on βconsumer choiceβ and cheap goods, and what happens if Trump strips that out while also gutting the social safety net. Gift link:

Also, I appreciate hearing others refer to the text it generates as average. It averages the text it was trained on. Personally, I aim for better than average when I write. #4C25
Thank you for providing these links! Your posts really help me come back to things later! #4C25
She talks about the haptic habit--muscle memory becoming ambient rhetoric--of doomscrolling, as explored in this article: enculturation.net/sneaky_rheto...

Catch me at session #I.29 at #4C25 talking about doing pre-tenure WPA work
Please, y'all, use your microphones. #4c25
Very much looking forward to #4C25! Between the pandemic and the birth of my second child, it'll be my first in-person Cs experience since 2019!
Just back from my first time at the First Year Experience conference. Returning to negative temps in MO after NOLA was a tough switch π₯Ά
Trying to divest from meta has really highlighted for me just how heavily Facebook is still used as a communication platform. Maybe particularly so in small/rural communities
