Excited to share this work! The consistent lack of cue-driven proactive control challenges assumptions about our ability to readily deploy top-down control. We rule out S-R mappings, task pace and task difficulty as explanations, while showing that implicit, experience-driven control remains intact.

Get ‘em out there, Jim! Senne Braem and Luis Jimenez have put out a really interesting series of null findings along these lines in the Stroop task as well.
Yes, block/proportion manipulations produce very reliable effects of adaptive control, but trial-level cuing effects are remarkably rare. We have a forthcoming review in PBR (with Julie Bugg, Chris Nuno, and Changrun Huang) on the wider “puzzle of profitless cues”. Stay tuned! ☺️
New paper from the lab now out online! @changrun-huang.bsky.social asked whether people use informative pre-cues to up-regulate cognitive control in the spatial Stroop task. Surprisingly, they do not, and we rule out some possible reasons why. Enjoy!
