Does it mean they're evacuating American citizens from the region? Or forced displacement/ethnic cleansing?

Journalist etc. Currently Irish Times correspondent in Beirut/Damascus & author of ‘My Fourth Time, We Drowned’ (Orwell Prize, Terzani Prize, Inge Feltrinelli Prize, Michel Deon Prize, Irish Book of the Year) & 'This is Also a Love Story' (coming 2026)
Does it mean they're evacuating American citizens from the region? Or forced displacement/ethnic cleansing?
"According to NRC’s estimates, 300,000 people have already been displaced..."
"Israel's evacuation orders demanding civilians leave multiple areas of Lebanon raise serious concerns under international humanitarian law, which prohibits the forcible transfer of civilian populations." #lebanon
Hey no no I’m in Nigeria! Coincidentally left right before this started for a work trip. Was going to go back next week, though not certain where I can stay once I go back now.
I'm actually in Nigeria right now (coincidentally left Saturday morning, hours before the war started), but yes, people are terrified & I guess I am among those who don't know can I go back to where I live for the foreseeable.
First I thought it was outside but now I think it is inside. These maps are very confusing to try to decipher, particularly when you are panicking.
(My own apartment also seems to be within the evacuation area.)
Today's evacuation orders in Beirut displace 100,000s - including elderly people, children, people with disabilities, etc. etc., all having to leave in a hurry with no idea what will happen to their homes. This kind of mass forced displacement is illegal under international law.

We were the first journalists to enter the Kurdish city of Kobane since Syrian government forces advanced across the country's northeast in January.
My report here: www.thetimes.com/world/middle...
The difference is striking: one side green, the other brown. It is the result of what local residents in Quneitra say was the spraying of chemicals by Israeli planes inside Syria in late January, destroying grazing areas and farmland.

"According to my calculations, from 1989 to 2014, battle-related deaths from cross-border conflicts averaged fewer than 15,000 a year. Beginning in 2014, the average has risen to over 100,000 a year." www.nytimes.com/2026/01/06/o...

Oh amazing, good to know! And thank you so much.
A new book by one of the writers and journalists with the most enduring sense of humanity and curiosity out there, is absolutely a reason to celebrate! (and part with £20 to pre-order the beauty)

Thank you so much! My understanding of how it works is that they sell a large paperback in Ireland and the hardback in the UK for the first year, and then they launch the smaller paperback in both. So to get a hardback maybe it’s necessary to order from the UK.
Thank you to @lighthousebks.bsky.social for adding 'This is Also a Love Story' to their most anticipated books of 2026(!!!) I have added them to the list of places the book can be preordered. Preorders really help! & always support independent bookshops where you can. sallyhayden.net/2026/01/26/t...
