Call of Duty as the mimetic language of imperial violence.
There's obvs been a lot of trading of imagery between the modern Millitary and modern millitary video games, but theres something about this that feels particularly notable / nauseating.
Call of Duty 4 tried to "look like" war, and now war is trying to look like Call of Duty.
This just makes me sad

I bounced off of 1 multiple times, but saw 2 all the way through, and it's hard not to pin that on the way Undead Burg feels like multiple big walls in a row, vs Forest of Fallen Giants which felt much more welcoming/ distinct and with more clear "win" states.
Underrated part of it (in its original release) is that it was significantly more accessible than DS1. Better healing, better tutorialization, a larger variety of paths from the start. Plus a town full of people who like you rather than one asshole who thinks you suck.
Itβs exhausting and disheartening and brutally sad, not least of all because fundamentally, it could be a different way. We could build it a different way. But a lot of people who say theyβd like that to be true are, themselves, too afraid to believe itβs possible.
