GBIF specimen records—number of specimens, unique species and spatial extent for Chordata, Arthropoda and Plantae (1950–2019).
"Here we show substantial declines in the rates of collection of specimen data over recent decades, from analysis of over 150 million records from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) spanning more than two centuries"

…Let me say that again: Expert coders using "generative AI" demonstrated a nearly 20% *increase* in their time, vs when writing code on their own; oh, and those increases are *worse* on the tasks with which they have more familiarity.
But that's not even the crucial part; this is the crucial part:…

I am thrilled to announce that I have joined the MOBI (molecular biosciences) faculty at MTSU and am now able to supervise PhD students. Possible projects in southeastern fish ecomorphology, darter cranial anatomy (muscles, brains, skulls), and fish biology/macroevolution in general. #teamfish #MTSU

A couple of designs. The left design is a blue background with purple text that reads "0 Days Since I Cried About an Anglerfish". The border of the design is a pale white nautical rope and features a purple anglerfish smiling brightly. The right design is similar, with a green background and purple text that reads "0 Days Since I Cried About a Crab". To the side of the border on this one, is a small purple crab with big bright eyes.
We're all collectively crying over the Anglerfish and Howie right now, right? 😭 RIGHT?
They weren’t JUST any fish and any crab—they were resilience, light, and a reminder that even the smallest lives can touch millions.

but likely has some modern elements (plastic foliage? may not be original). Anyone have any good contacts or resources for old taxidermy conservation/provenance? It would be cool to have an idea of where this is from and how old, but it has been donated multiple times and documentation is limited.

Museum folks! We have gotten a donation of some amazing old taxidermy pieces and I am just fascinated by one item. It's a large cabinet in what looks like a Victorian style and has some old features (oil painting background, solid carved wood frame)...

I hadn't posted about this paper before, but over the summer I added unbending features (sensu TPSutil) for fish landmark data to my package LOST. Just sent an update to CRAN to make unbend.tps.poly work for 2D and 3D data, planning to update unbend.spine too

Frog Fibres: What Muscle Architecture Can Tell Us About Anuran Locomotor Function
Our study utilises a new, automated approach to digitally extracting muscle fibres from μCT data, allowing us to present the first digital analysis of muscle fibre architecture in frogs, including so...
The last paper coming from my #PhD thesis has just been published in the Journal of Morphology! 🐸 We use #diceCT and @fountainscholar.bsky.social 's GoodFibes package to examine how muscle fibre architecture varies across #frogs specialising in jumping, walking and swimming:
