it's actually both; webp images can either be lossy or lossless. bluesky uses the lossy mode

i would also highlight how twitter handled pngs on their site:
- they test for lesser filesize between 85% jpeg and png
- they also leave small images (≤900px) and indexed color (8-bit) pngs alone

apparently it uses quality 100 (i.e. best possible jpeg quality (though *still* has jpeg artifacts and trashes the alpha channel))

but at that point why not just let people upload PNGs? there's absolutely no reason not to when an equivalent png would be much smaller

really got fucking monkey's pawed when i saw the "remove jpeg hardcoding" PR

the frontend *still* converts to jpeg and thus we get jpegged images converted to webp

literally the only silver lining is that transparent images uploaded from third-party clients will remain transparent

the compression artifacts should be purely be because of WebP

also yeah bluesky seems to be A/Bing this so some people (like myself) have it and others don't

the funny thing about this is that the bluesky client still converts uploads to jpeg (and thus it gets double-converted)
so you have to use a third-party client (i'm using deck.blue here) to bypass that and upload a png directly
