Is social media addictive to young people? A jury in California is being asked to decide β even though the question still divides researchers

During the report period 2013-23, there were 1700 suicides per year nationally by people under current or recent MH care. We @ncish.bsky.social examined their risks & stresses & clinical care. This video summarises the findings.
Mental health is shaped by more than just the mind.
Mental health is shaped by social and structural factorsβyet too often, mental health policies fail to address them.
A realistic approach could definitely provide insights into what works for whom and in what context to help inform decision making.
The adapted review scopes, extracts, and maps policy documents using an existing framework to create programme theories which aim to understand why, how, for whom and in what circumstances national policies address the impacts of social determinants of self-harm and STB in England.
My first paper got published!
A protocol paper for an adapted rapid realist review to explore how national-level policies in England address the impact of social determinants on self-harm and suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB) across the whole population.

Weβve secured funding to host a research day on emotionally demanding research π
We hope that this event will help prepare PGRs/ECRs for EDR, equip them with valuable skills, and create open discussions. Huge thanks to our amazing speakers for giving their time so generously!

Today, we held our 6th Culture of Care Personalised Approach to Risk national learning event. This was focused on racial equity, self-harm and suicide prevention.
Two post-it notes with feedback - it's ok to ask if someone feels suicidal - very powerful event - a safe space to discuss incredibly important & difficult topic. As a researcher, these spaces are important to reconnect with the meaning
Two impactful takeaways from the Stronger Together - Empowering Community Action to Prevent Youth Suicide event
Great to hear from the panelists @mariamichail.bsky.social, Philip Pirie, Jane Boland, Leah Preston & Lizzie Mitchell.
Pooja Saini for chairing & Hajirah Jehan for putting it together!

Hi, great question. So as a part of my research, I meet with a youth advisory group.
Whilst chronic pain specifically hasn't been discussed, we have talked about disability and it has been set as one of the priorities. So this is an area that I'm going to look into, hope that answers your question
The self-harm and suicide prevention research group at the @imh-uob.bsky.social aim to understand and tackle the risks of self-harm and suicide across different contexts.

I hope that with my PhD, I can contribute to the growing literature around social determinants and suicide prevention and ultimately produce evidence-based recommendations for policy and research.
Suicide prevention research has largely focused on how we tackle these individual risks, though recently, greater attention has been given to social determinants.
What this means is that I'll be focusing on the broader social, political, economic and environmental factors as well as how they interact with individual risks.
My research involves Investigating the Social determInants of youTh suicidE (InSITE) π insite.ahgchen.uk
I'm examining broader upstream factors that influence suicidal thoughts, behaviours and self-harm among young people in England.
Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, this year it's about transforming how we perceive this complex issue. I thought I'd talk about my PhD at @imh-uob.bsky.social and how I'm changing the narrative in terms of self-harm and suicide prevention research
Suicide prevention requires systemic change. Governments worldwide must:
- Decriminalise suicide
- Implement national suicide prevention strategies
- Fund accessible mental health care
Policy saves lives. Letβs demand action.
