Like at this point it’s no secret to the people writing these headlines that this kind of thing has been roundly criticized for years and years. It’s an intentional, conscientious decision on their part. They know they’re propagandists (and, for better or worse, we all are!).

My working assumption about the prescriptivist (Boo! Hiss!) suppression of the hyphen in English is down to the fact that even style-guide compilers have been taught by teachers who lack confidence in/are ignorant about hyphenation.

In Ireland it's informally called "summer time", even though we don't actually have what other cultures would call a summer: we just have a week or two of watery sunshine better known as "exam time".
