These are special abilities that the ULEM can activate by overloading its Chaos Drive cores, building up the energy, then releasing it at overwhelming levels

GUN then shelved Project Umbra and kept it under wraps until they could find a safer method to test the ULEM and put the finishing touches on it. After the events of Sonic Adventure 2, the project was abandoned entirely.

In an incident when testing the output of the Chaos Drive Cores, a massive energy surge erupted from the ULEM, leveling an entire testing facility and killing numerous staff. The ULEM itself, however, would turn out to be undamaged from the explosion.

After production of their mechanized infantry such as the GUN Hunter and GUN Beetle proved successful, they sought to replicate the Ultimate Lifeform in this manner, using the Chaos Drives to emulate Shadow's abilities. This would result in the creation of the GUN - ULEM.

Project Umbra was an initiative from G.U.N. to not let the research and data from Project Shadow go to waste following its shutdown and their raid on the Space Colony Ark.
