I canβt stress this enough. The state of 4th Amendment law is that the cops canβt force you to type in a passcode but they can force you to swipe your finger or present your face. Never stop using passcodes/passwords to unlock your devices. And consider additional code to unlock Signal.

Hence I will always look with a side eye at PornHub for submitting to the CRTC that porn has no cultural value. It does, pornhub just treats it like data and cash.

The real problem with law is that Iβm out here citing recent cases that are clearly obviously relevant except theyβre from 2001 and Jesus Christ that was 24 years ago.

Learning media history is also a cool thing. Radio, especially ham, is a reasonably good analogue. But so are traveling pamphleteers selling snake oil. What did we do then? What worked? What didnβt?

Digital policy isnβt novel, itβs meatspace-first like anything else. Worried about extremism? Look into social isolation & community care. Worried about children? Teach them and their adults media literacy. Also maybe make privacy law less about balancing financial interests and more human-centred.

And people laugh about it but moves like this have far-reaching social consequences. And Iβm willing to bet women and queer folks will actually end up eating the worst of those effects.
