I'm amused by the warlike names of these small animals: spear-shield, knife-shield, Boreas's shield and sickle-shield.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the lore of this creature, but in video games(going along with this analogy) in general, bosses usually possess trophies /relics, which highlight their importance (someone's half-eaten body parts or other people's trinkets in large numbers, for example)
Could it be that the name of this creature refers to the sword of the same name from Slavic fairy tales and myths?
