I’ve been talking about Alysa Liu’s story about her quitting skating only to come back and become even better because she did it for herself and this came to me in a dream…

Bluesky is the new science Twitter, new study by @whysharksmatter.bsky.social and Julia Wester concludes!

"Results show that for every reported professional benefit that scientists once gained from Twitter, scientists can now gain that benefit more effectively on Bluesky than on Twitter."

Don’t fuck your wife’s adopted adult children

Always use the mic at a conference even if you’re loud. People who can’t hear you *can’t hear you * when you ask if you can hear them in the back. Some of us went to one too many hardcore shows in our youth without ear plugs and our hearing ain’t what it used to be πŸ₯Ί

In a study following 23 million people age 18-59 (pretty young) for 4 years…despite the fact that the ones who got the COVID vaccine were overall older and sicker at baseline, they not only had 74% lower risk of dying from COVID than the unvaccinated but 25% lower risk of dying from any other cause!

Discovering this at 11pm when the person I thought was my ride from the party says "I think I'm too tired to drive safely later, how are you getting home?" was not my favourite. Napping on a friend's couch to get the first service home to take my morning medication is not the 2026 vibe I wanted

People sometimes ask me for a business card, and I never have a card, but I almost always have some random assortment of science education material on me. So when a man asked me for my card earlier today I dug around in my pockets & handed him a MILF zine, horseshoe crab card, and a squid sticker πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Twelve matchsticks

Twelve matchsticks can be laid on the table to produce a variety of shapes. For example:

Here there is an illustration of three shapes made from matchsticks: a shape like a two by two square with two one-by-one squares attached to it, a three by three square, and a five by one rectangle.

Some shapes have the same area and some have a different area. For example, the shapes above have areas 6, 9 and 5.

Arrange 12 matchsticks to make a shape with area 4.

Many people got interested in this puzzle at MASA yesterday. The most fascinating thing is how many people assumed it was a trick question and looked for a solution with sticks inside or outside or on top of each other *assuming that sort of thing was the intent*.
