Fantastic to see the practicalities of lichen translocations demonstrated by our amazing experts #conservation π
Stinky Sticta lichen on the bark of an ash tree
Ash trees are lifelines for rare #lichens like Stinky Sticta & Black-bordered Shingle. But ash dieback threatens them both.
Our team is carefully relocating threatened lichens to trees with similar bark, giving them the best chance of survival. π

Had a great time yesterday at the @naturalengland.bsky.social Nature Returns conference @rbgkew.bsky.social - interesting to hear from the teams working on filling the evidence gaps around carbon and greenhouse gases, as well as panel discussions on the way forward for nature based solutions.
A thriving natural world is the foundation of economic growth and vital for health and wellbeing. Language that pits these against each other is unhelpful and deeply concerning.
Nature is not a blocker to growth.
The UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has claimed that 'The balance has gone too far in the direction of always protecting every bat and every newt.' But how can this statement be true when the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world?π
Our political leaders are saying nature protections are blocking growth - when the truth is that nature underpins our economy. Good myth-buster here π

Even with the ground still mostly frozen solid round by me (North Wiltshire) there are fungi doing their thing - velvet shanks on a dead ash tree.
