We kinda cooked on this to be honest. Sometimes it's more fruitful to talk about a deeply flawed and somewhat repellant game than it is the critically acclaimed classics

My girlfriendβs birthday is in four days, and theyβd really appreciate any help with getting this goal met! Its been a horrible several days for them and this would help take one thing off their plate. Please boost if you see this! #MutualAid
We talked over the epic highs and lows of this RPG maker classicβ¦ and of 2000s era localizationβ¦
see. this is what I live for...
well. I might have bad news on that front.
Enjoyed Phoenix's explorations a lot. They capture something about 24 Killers that makes it really special, the simultaneous sense of loss and joy.
Also includes a (light, measured) defense of Return to Silent Hill... read if you dare.
Wrote a bit about Resident Evil Requiem and how it's part of a long-term horror trend of reboots and re-visitations which are more nostalgic than terrifying.
The absurdism of 24 Killers is what I love the most. Treating home with loving irreverence and humour reminded me of how often home is weaponized against communities. As Artemis stated in her piece for this issue, home is not a place, but it's also not a fixed meaning.
We are scheming schemes and making plans at TIER. We hope you will join us...
exactlyyyyyyy
good for you sincerely

On the last day of Black History Month, please help boost this post to help my disabled partner Salem. They are trying to pay for their OCD treatments, and after experiencing a rape a few days ago they could really use the help. Please repost if you see this, even $1 helps! gofund.me/0fd356684
I have spent a lot of my time on this earth running from the worship of death and yet everywhere it returns. The world is an unmarked grave.
I'm thinking a lot about Pope Francis calling the catholic parish in Gaza every day of the genocide until he died.
I don't want to set everything else aside. And yet. Imagine having a leader who was yearning for peace.
I was thinking recently how long it has been since doing a direct response to a piece of games writing and lo and behold something got me worked up enough to post.

Medical institutions are silencing their staff and impeding efforts to build solidarity with medical workers in Gaza. My reporting:
I left the last full-time editing gig because the freelance rates were so low it was impossible to do my job π
One of the most keenly felt elements of the atrophying of media is that nobody can fucking edit anymore.
I think the simple answer is βwell what do you do in this space that you are comparing to the worst thing that ever happenedβ
Requiem can be placed within a long lineage of great Japanese art that deals with post-war trauma through science-fiction. Despite the fact that itβs set in a fictional American city, Resident Evil has always evoked the specters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (released 54 years after the tragedies) famously ends with an American bomb streaking through the sky like a comet and landing right in the center of Raccoon City. It explodes in a fury of blinding white light. Buildings blast apart and zombies are vaporized in an instant as a tower of flame engulfs the city block by block. Itβs played as a βcool girls donβt look at explosionsβ escape sequence, but itβs a deeply unnerving scene removed from the gameβs B-movie corniness. Itβs not far off from the real-world accounts of Hibakusha, who experienced Japanβs bombings as children.
Making an argument like this REQUIRES that you do close reading. You have to discuss the brass tacks of how something is shot/how it plays in order to ground this claim in the work you are discussing. This trades only in vibes and the broadest facts about the work.
"It doesnβt sound right. Something so barbaric feels like it should have happened centuries ago" The Israeli genocide of Palestine, the war in Ukraine, and mass displacement in Sudan are knocking on your fucking door.
That polygon review of RE:9 is bad I'm sorry. I don't know that it is "offensive" but it's poorly edited and ludicrously out-of-scope.
Surprise! We have one more contribution to our interactive fiction issue, on questions of how and why electronic games can have physical presence.
I wrote about a different Disco Elysium like than the one everyone is talking about...
lol lmao
My good friend Sibyl lost her job recently and got walloped with student loan payments. anything you could donate would go a long way for her venmo.com/code?user_id...
It is a huge asset to the city and its culture that most of the sports venues are within city limits. itβs not all good (I truly hate Wrigleyville lol) but come the fuck on.
