A long time ago in this same galaxy, we asked ourselves "where does azole antifungal resistance in fungi come from?"

So we set about sampling Aspergillus fumigatus to build a collection of 1000+ samples spanning a century from 34 countries.

Antifungal treatment strategies and their impact on resistance development in clinical settings Abstract. Invasive fungal diseases, particularly among immunocompromised patients, represent a growing clinical challenge due to limited therapeutic option

nterested in clinical approaches to mitigate antifungal resistance development?! 🚨

Kre6-dependent Ξ²-1,6-glucan biosynthesis only occurs in the conidium of Aspergillus fumigatus You have to enable JavaScript in your browser's settings in order to use the eReader.

New publication🚨Long term collaborations pay off!

I met Jean-Paul 8 years ago in France πŸ‡«πŸ‡· where he told me he doubted that A. fumigatus cell wall did not contain any B1,6-glucan🀷 (random conversation)

Now we have shown it! ssNMR to the rescueπŸ‘Œ

Research Associate (PDRA) in Fungal Infection Biology :Oxford Road The Bertuzzi’s laboratory at the Manchester Fungal Infection is looking for two outstanding candidates be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, working on an Wellcome Trust funded project investigating how Mucorales fungi adapt to natural and in-host environments and how stress adaptation drives infection. The posts are available from the 5th of January 2026 on a full-time basis for 3 years, with the possibility to extend.

JOB ALERT @bertuzzilab.bsky.social is recruiting 2 Research Associates for a project on Mucorales! Very exciting and can definitely recommend working with this group ☺️

Type VI secretion system activity at lethal antibiotic concentrations leads to overestimation of weapon potency Competition assays are a mainstay of modern microbiology, offering a simple and cost-effective means to quantify microbe–microbe interactions in vitro. Here, we demonstrate a key weakness of this meth...

Does your lab perform killing assays?
TL;DR: we’ve identified a problem that can bias the outcome of killing assays, making antagonism look stronger than it really is.
Adding a simple extra step can mitigate this bias!

Health risks with environmental changes and mould exposure. Key impacts of flooding include increased precipitation, rising sea levels and land use changes, leading to indoor mould growth and health risks such as respiratory issues, asthma exacerbation and mould infections. Case studies highlight varying health outcomes from Hurricane Katrina and Rita (2005), Colorado Flood (2013) and Hurricane Harvey (2017).

Drivers of emerging fungal pathogens in a changing world. Climate change factors, such as rising temperatures and increasing resistance to fungicides, enhance fungal thermotolerance and drive the emergence of pathogens. Social determinants, including urbanisation, global travel and limited healthcare access, heighten human vulnerability to fungal infections. Other contributing factors, like environmental niches and unconfirmed environmental sources, further support the spread and persistence of fungal pathogens. These drivers contribute to the emergence of pathogens like Candida auris, Candida orthopsilosis and Cryptococcus deuterogatii.

Climate change and antifungal resistance: key mechanisms and pathogen examples. Climate change drives the development of antifungal resistance through mechanisms such as environmental pollution with fungicides, prolonged heat stress and increased mutation rates in fungi. These conditions promote genetic mutations, increased resistance to antifungal drugs and more challenging infections in humans and plants
