I took the opportunity to grab Bloodtide, the next in the series and damn if the author did not immediately catch me out again with the reveal in the final act again. Series goes way beyond "oh it's just a Roman Empire continuation/analogue" you might take from the description/intro.
More book recs: @sophieburnham.bsky.social's Ex Romana series was one of my surprise "wow this is even more compelling than I could have guessed" pickups from last year. Finished the first book, Sargassa last year and had one of those genuine "did not see THAT coming" pauses in the final act.
