Penguin Classics bookcover of Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice and Other Tales". The silhouette of a gondola rears up against a blue, foggy background
re-reading Der Tod in Venedig by Thomas Mann
"into stagnant, shadowy-green, glassy waters where milk-white blossoms floated as big as plates, and among them exotic birds with grotesque beaks stood hunched in the shallows"

Trilogies.
To me, the middle volumes *often* feel inhibited, stultified. Too busy reeling from the events of the first and laying groundwork for the third. Not filled enough by themselves.
Is it just me? #BookSky

I'll be combining these prompts with techniques I learnt from KJ Charles during her Goths for Breakfast writing workshop.
-Character is an *expression* of trait, not the fact of it
-Emotion-laden words infuse character throughout a work
I'll post some but not all

Brightly colored rooster in orange, yellow, red and black. The back tail-feathers are iridescent with greens and blues. He's holding up one foot because he does not want me to photograph him and he is trying to get away. In a parking lot with oil stains on the pavement.
Well, I don't need the Merlin App to know what bird this is! Had to chase him, slowly π, to get the photo.

vast, and simple, and irreversible.
