I feel like I would have loved Casablanca if I'd seen it much earlier in my life, when I didn't have an analysis of colonialism and imperialism, when I thought WWII was a war between Good Guys and Bad Guys rather than two different sets of genocidal empires fighting for geopolitical dominance.
The white characters act like it's completely normal that Morocco is French territory, never making the connection that the Nazis' drive to conquer the rest of Europe stems from the exact same white supremacist ideologies as France's colonization of Morocco (and many other countries).
I've been seeing a lot of people talking about how great Casablanca is, and...am I the only person who didn't like it?
I watched it for the first time last year, and I can see why people love it - it's artistically well-done and explicitly antifascist - but the colonialism really jumped out at me.
Also, tbh, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing if people are getting more analysis from podcasts, video essays, etc. rather than books.
There are some really great podcasts out there, and some terrible books! I don't think the medium matters as much as the quality of the analysis.
For what it's worth, I mostly read non-fiction - I find it takes more mental energy to suspend disbelief and get into a fictional world, whereas non-fiction is much easier for me to get into.
I do love fiction when I'm in the right mood for it, but that's not super often.
I have been discussing this with my mom a lot and I think the real divide here isn't generational or class: it's who has been both online & marginalized enough to know the red flags in an edgelord's reddit comments.

Basically I have mixed feelings about social media as a tool for political education, and I also have mixed feelings about holding up books as the only/best medium for poli ed or learning about the world in general. I love books *and* I don't think they should be held up above other forms of media!
and how they make sense of their experiences, in ways that might not ever get book deals due to capitalism, white supremacy, etc in publishing.
Of course it can also go really badly in a lot of ways, and can lead to much shallower understandings of the world.
and different people process best in different ways, and I genuinely don't think that learning from podcasts or videos in general is inherently bad.
Learning from social media *can* be good too - in the best cases, it allows people to hear from marginalized people about their lives and histories,
Like on one hand, books can convey much more nuance and deeper analysis than, say, Instagram posts. If someone is getting all of their understanding of the world from social media, that's not great!
But on the other hand, podcasts and videos can be just as nuanced and thoughtful as books,

And even though I prefer non-fiction, I do often find it hard to find non-fiction books that click for me: not too depressing, not too academic/dry, written in engaging language, with a new twist on topics I'm interested in that I haven't already come across elsewhere.

I get most books I want to read from the library.
As a picky reader who DNFs a ton of books and rarely re-reads, it just doesn't make sense for me to buy books unless I'm really excited about them and don't want to wait to get them from the library.
