Saw a thoughtful thread about AI, don't want to QT or argue. But. The biggest rage factor with LLMs is the people who, because genAI is transformative for coding, think it's transformative for everything else, because they devalue every other form of work and labor and knowledge.
this is not an amount of money any individual or household should be able to have and we have to abolish both billionaires as a group and the economic system that makes them possible
One disgusting aspect of all this is Trump fundamentally doesn’t care about it at all. He barely knows where any of these places are. He likes cash in brown envelopes and being on TV as Mr Big Important Guy. He’s just willing to pull any lever he thinks might keep that stuff flowing indefinitely.

It seems to me that the foundational 'wrong turn' in education was the increasing rhetoric from universities themselves and their supporters that the primary value of a university education was increased earning power.
That leads pretty directly to this place we're in now.

I hoped higher ed would form a roughly unified front against generative AI, a tool of automation, theft, surveillance, & control. Nope. I believed faculty & staff might. Nope. Ok, then, the fight against this job-destroying, mind-melting, fascism-enabling machine is going to need new coalitions.

Even the framing of AI as a general purpose technology, like email or web search, hides that what’s actually happening is that a small set of specific technologies privately controlled by a small set of billionaires is being widely implemented is a ton of sociotechnical domains and we can’t stop it
No one has seriously said LLMs aren’t important or that AI is categorically junk.
Some of us have said that there is something bigger than tech. It’s called power — governance, civic norms, etc — & refusal is absolutely part of how we think soberly about that power. Who has it & how they use it.

It’s trivially easy to use studies from the 80s and 90s to teach AI. It’s almost as if people never learned anything!

I think it's best for everyone to understand that the unified class project of billionaires right now is to do to white collar workers what globalization and neoliberalism did to blue collar workers.
