GERMAN PRESIDENT STEINMEIER:
β.. the United States has broken with the values that it helped to establish ..
β.. we have now moved beyond the stage where we can lament the lack of respect for international law or the erosion of the international order; we are far beyond that, I believe.β

Thanks, will look at it. Certainly US is dysfunctional. Availability of welfare state services in Finland as the explanatory factor?
Fascinating article. Basic income experiments do not yield the predicted positive results, this Dutch newspaper article sums up the evidence and only in poorer countries do you see significant differences vis-a-vis the control group.
ICYMI: Trump has just about decimated the federal workforce, with more than 199,000 people pushed out since Jan, per a new report.
Nearly 10% of the entire federal civilian workforce gone.

New paper out in Journal of Social Policy - Looking at the rising role of cities in the social investment welfare state. As new challenges - like shortages - loom, cities are innovating to find practical answers, setting new policy norms along the way: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the next EU budget: "Last time, we had a leading role in the Frugal Four. Next time, we will have a leading role in another group."
"We will be tough, but being a part of the Frugal Four is no longer the right place for us."

A new bill rapidly making its way through the US Senate threatens to devastate Russia. But also parts of the European Union economy.
I break down the Graham-Blumenthal bill.
'op basis van' moet natuurlijk zijn 'met aandacht voor ', excuus. Bottom line: uitstekende column.

ECA seems to have just put a bomb under the future of the performance-based model of the RRF with their latest report, and Dutch media is loving it. "RRF is 'completely absurd' " www.ewmagazine.nl/buitenland/n...
indications that China is considering to rebalance its growth model
ook interessant om eerst te betogen dat RRF "ultra vires" is om in de zin daarna te betogen dat het de eerste keer is dat art. 122 van het verdrag werd gebruikt.
mooi interview, met plezier gelezen
Sunshine, birds and flowers everywhere, today is my last working day @eui-eu.bsky.social Badia Fiesolana, one of the most beautiful campuses in Europe. I will miss this place.
Well written! The Economists love letter to 'the European model'
Greek 10-year bond yield is lower than US, UK and Australia.

This piece from Politico from a couple of weeks ago is really good - on why Europe does not want to import agricultural products from the USA (for good reason): www.politico.eu/article/dona...
Learned recently that the European Commission has its own internal AI tool, based on thousands of EC documents and implementation documents of reforms and investments at MS level. New research papers that will come out should be very interesting.
EU researchers pay attention. As just announced in our @eui-eu.bsky.social conference on the Recovery and Resilience Facility: there will soon be a call for papers for a major evaluation conference at the European Commission in early 2026 on the effects of the RRF.
Exactly! There is no trade-off between welfare and warfare, this false narrative won't gain the EU much support. The more generous welfare states of Europe also do a lot better economically (GDP/Competitiveness) and with labour shortages, now is the time to improve social policy, not cut them.
