Threw together a loot chart for my creature zine because felt it needed something at the end. Like, the creatures gotta drop something when killed, right?

Roll weapon + Might or Swiftness and compare to Armor of opponent. The difference is subtracted from their Life Force.
Life Force at 0=death. No death saves, etc.
Still playing with it in general. Once I have something worked out I'll share some math for you nerds.
You get five points to distribute between your four ability scores (Might, Swiftness, Mind, and Spirit). Scores can be any number from 0-5.
There will be classes too. They determine which die is rolled for specific skills. Weapons are rolled as a die from d4-d12 depending on weapon type.
I am picturing a Dark Crystal type of setting. No common fantasy races, PCs are weak, but can slowly grow in power, magic is rare and wondrous (that's the hardest landing to stick).
I might steal Shadowdark's torch mechanic.
Thinking of creating another other new TTRPG (I know).
This will be for my Wednesday night players, but I might share it if it looks promising.
The core rules are: Roll die+ability versus target number. Dice explode.
Max ability score is 5.
Die is usually d6, but can vary from d4 to d12.
This is the one trap that I have used a few times and NO ONE has fallen for it yet.
To be fair, there have been a few other traps that each party faced beforehand, thus priming them for treachery.
They are clever, not wise.

This was one of my favorites at age 13 and I have revisited it a couple of times since, to notice pretty much all the same issues that you have addressed. It still has a spot in my heart, in spite of its warts.
I think they just stalk people and dig through their trash to catch cheaters.
They also come across an intriguing mystery roughly once a week.
The only ethical course of action is to dismantle the DHS entirely.
