Extreme fire weather days are increasing worldwide.
Since 1979, days with FWI > p95 have risen globally, closely tracking global warming.
More heat → more fire-conducive conditions.

Meanwhile, Spain's massive investment in renewables is paying dividends now: with prices for Spanish industry and consumers low and stable compared with other European economies.

I’ve heard from multiple friends today about daycares being raided and parents being ripped out of cars (in one case with a child left behind in the backseat). Grim times here.
This is an interesting result, but we argued in a paper last year that North Pacific jet trends are not inconsistent with observed low frequency variability. A southward trend ended just as the satellite era began.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.

When global temperatures shot up by ~6°C about 56 million years ago, plants were unable to thrive
The reduced ability of vegetation & soils to capture & store carbon may have kept temperatures elevated for >100,000 years
Today Earth is warming ~10 times faster than it did 56 million years ago
Floods in Southeast Asia have claimed hundreds of lives and caused massive economic disruption.

The Vietnamese Bach Ma Mountain Peak station recorded one-day rainfall of 1,739 mm - close to the global one-day record and perhaps a new record for the northern hemisphere. It is part of a deluge Viet Nam has seen in October, shattering 35 precip records. e.vnexpress.net/news/news/en...

Figure from a Hydrology and Earth System Sciences article about projections of drought in Australia, showing much larger changes for a drought index that includes potential evapotranspiration (SPEI) than for one that only includes precipitation (SPI). Source: https://hess.copernicus.org/articles/29/4689/2025/hess-29-4689-2025.html
This is a common finding when studying drought in the recent instrumental record and in future projections: much more change in metrics that include the impacts of warming (on vapor-pressure deficit and potential evapotranspiration) when compared to changes in precipitation alone.
📣 Summer low flows decreased in Germany in the last 5 decades and increases in evapotranspiration played a role in that, esp in less humid areas.

New study w/ @climate-guy.bsky.social ! Increased evaporative demand due to climate change has increased crop irrigation demand; in the Central Valley, this additional irrigation demand is equivalent to ~11% of the region's observed groundwater loss.
