For delicate wash effects, the flour-of sulfur method is very easy and produces soft, pale tones. You need only olive oil and precipitated sulfur powder called flour of sulfur, which you can keep in an old saltshaker. Use the olive oil as a paint, brushing it directly on the surface of the plate where you want the tone. Shake the sulfur powder onto the oil. blow the powder off undesired places it has fallen on, and let the plate sit for a few hours.
