A medieval illustration of a hedgehog with grapes skewered on its spines
It was believed in medieval times that hedgehogs had spikes so they could roll over fruit to carry home to their children, which is not true but is a really cute idea

In a hospital, there are a lot of clever people doing a lot of clever things.
And...
If you can support someone to feel a bit more heard & hopeful, a bit more valued & respected... then it's time well spent.
We must appreciate both the incredible technical, & the warm human sides of healthcare.
A 'speaking up' culture is shaped by our normal day to day interactions- are we open to hearing things that might initially feel annoying or unhelpful or 'negative'? Or are these shut down? A speaking up culture is not compatible with a 'be positive' culture.
THIS π IS TRUE....

I have officially reached the age where I am bothered by lights being on, doors left open, loud noises, and people
I'm an NHS dietician and 80% of my work is girls who weigh under 45 kilos thinking they are too heavy. You have literally no idea what your dieting and performative "I feel fat" - when you know full well you're not- social media posts are doing to young people. I do. Please stop. If you work with people with chronic, complex conditions...
If you're frustrated with how mechanical systems are so ill-suited to complex human challenges...
If you've tried & tried to get big institutions to become βmore human'...
Please get yourself a cuppa & read this brilliant, hopeful report.
I proposed an idea today that everyone working in NHS should have access to regular reflective practice, & it'd need to be organisationally prioritised.
I knew as I said it I sounded crazy & it could never happen in reality. But surely what's actually crazy is that we still don't prioritise this?

What will the new road tax be on these?

Itβs a generalisation, but there's an almost impossible combination right now of huge numbers of people desperately needing help from clinical services, at the same time as people working in clinical services at the limits of coping & exhaustion.
This isnβt βnewsβ, but itβs important to say it.
Enjoyed connecting with international colleagues at the mental health nursing leaders summit in Barcelona. The plan is to establish an international council for mental health nursing, and my heart is fully behind this project, but my head wonders how it will work and what impact it can have.
Just discovered star wars legions! Thanks our KJπnot sure my partner will be impressed with another completist rabbit hole and house full of half painted models π

Worries me that staff well being services then treat staff anxious about safe staffing...placung the problem in the person not the organisation
Just wondering at what point we're going to say, "hold on a minute lads, maybe this has gone a bit too far now."
Hopefully it's while we still have a health service left.

Brilliant. Would love to see one for the professionals- or imagine- 'who dares wins'
"We intervene to prevent suicide, yet in doing so might restrict an individual's valued freedoms in some very complex ways. These consequences need to be considered as risks in themselves". A short comment piece to provoke thought and attention on relationships, not just risk.
Absolute textbook.
And they wonder why there's almost no goodwill left.

Nursing staff work tirelessly to provide the best care for patients, and it is appalling to see that they are being slapped with extortionate parking fines for simply being at work.
The government and NHS trusts must rethink their approach to parking and give nursing staff the respect they deserve.
Something to think about
In his newsletter today about the frankly ridiculous decision to withdraw free COVID vaccines to NHS workers:
"It's also a matter of respect. After some recent brutal years, NHS staff deserve more than a pat on the back and a bill for their own jab."
Well bloody said, @roylilley1.bsky.social π
