I think you forgot your very influential and surely top-of-strategy presence on Tumblr

Pre-caller ID era, our family answering machine got a tearful, heartfelt, wrong number message of β€œCathy, this is Mark, I still love you, if you don’t call me back I’ll know you don’t feel the same.” I am still haunted by Mark’s Shakespearean failures

You can't... repeal... a scientific finding. At that point it's just called lying about it.

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

I really like your point about a hypothetical LLM that is averaging your various writing over decades, and how it would never be able to sound like who you are right now (and how you write now). I hadn’t thought about that in quite that way before, but now it seems so obvious.

When people refer to a single post on their blog as β€œa blog” instead of a post (on their blog)

I spent much of my 20s witnessing the drawn out cancer, hospice, & death of my sister β€” and this all feels so parallel. Long-present societal problems increasingly metastasizing, but also the anticipatory grief & the contrasting what you used to think the future would be and what it will be now.

Lately the Fluent folks have been community-minded & helpful, and the Gravity Forms/Gravity Perks teams.

(For many of the companies that I would have said several years ago, my trust has soured after private equity/big name acquisition and the declining customer support that followed.)

I once found that the page for some unpleasant (but not fatal) disease listed the prognosis as β€œup to ten years,” misrepresenting that the cited study stopped keeping track of patients after ten years, because everybody lived! Oof. (Don’t worry, I fixed it. 😊)

If any child in your life has an IEP or 504 plan:

Trump fired (we think) all of the employees in the office at the US Department of Education that disburses special education funds from the federal government that school districts use to pay for those plans.

My double vision is very unhappy with this update. Everything visually buzzes! And the glassy effect on the edges of everything just looks like someone using Photoshop in 2004 set the β€œSharpen” sliders way too high ☹️

I know everyone is consumed with other news, but this is a big fucking deal: The Trump administration says that IUDs and the Pill are actually abortions.

Here's what USAID told the NYT about the $10m in birth control they plan to destroy.

"They have already been piloting drones in the city for months. One of these drones was used last weekend at a Juneteenth celebration to disperse crowds of young people."

A little more on RFK's new vaccine committee:

Malone - claimed vaccines cause AIDS

Kulldorff - promoted mass COVID infection

Meissner - opposed vaccines and masks for kids

Pebsworth - worked at antivax nonprofit

Levi - FL Surgeon General cited his paper when recommending not to get COVID vax

The AI alt text on these is so bad. Surely you can do better?

The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 β€”Β a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

Our client worked in the arts in Venezuela. He is LGBTQ. His tattoos are benign. But ICE submitted photos of his tattoos as evidence he isTren de Aragua. His @ImmDef attorney planned to present evidence he is not. But never got the chance because our client has been disappeared.

Fifteen years ago my band at the time named an album β€œSing Till You Die.” You can probably imagine how many smug people have tried to β€œthat’s not a word” me since then, I will now show them this post in response

The moderation changes Meta is making across its platforms is another opportunity for me to remind you that having your own actively maintained site is one of the best ways to assure that people will always be able to find you, no matter what happens to the social media sites you don't control.

Wikipedia is the last major, visible platform for facts that they can’t buy. The attacks are going to be merciless.
