Carburetor then I'm assuming.. Bad fuel mix possibilities in a few ways: actual bad gas/moisture in the gas, or carburetor needs adjusting. My dad would say to dump a bottle of Heet into it with each tank of gas.

Also, could be a cylinder misfiring. That can be intermittent.

Overall- yes. They will wear more evenly and last longer. Good alignment helps too.
