Wait, you can bet on that? Prediction markets allow people to place money on the outcome of just about anything, but is that a good thing for our time and money?

A week and a day ago, I was on tv to talk prediction markets, and the risks of financializing everything. It seems pretty high risk for top secret info to become an opportunity for a (relatively anon via crypto) windfall. Watch the segment here www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/v...

Tomorrow I’ll be on again (3pm KDKA CBS #Pittsburgh to talk about #LoveStoryFX, the β€œAmerican royals,” and how the show makes us all nostalgic for a lower tech 90s kind of world. I’m excited esp since tomorrow night’s episode of Love Story is likely wedding weekend.

Happy Birthday to @someclevername.bsky.social, who is the only person with whom I’d drop out of life to follow around the NIN peel it back tour. He said on Saturday that if they add more shows and come to Pgh, we are bringing the girls. I’m not sure it’s their thing, but the girls and I love you!

This one worked best though for a while we used the Terro dust to also create a perimeter of containment. amzn.to/4ciTCzG

I also tried this perimeter ant block stuff I forget the name of but they were these pellets you put around your house. Not sure if they did anything. I bought the outside retro baits too and put them in areas near our house where I saw colony activity.

So we went from Terro to Advion to Ortho home defense as the ant problem worsened each year. I never called an exterminator and tried to keep the Ortho outside but did have a few tricky spots where I did also cover inside. Ventilate and if you have pets make sure you follow the instructions esp.

Same thing happening to journalism as at universities following the massive federal budget cuts. You can't break institutions, cast off multiple age cohorts of journalists/scholars, & just flip switches later & expect go back to the ex ante SQ. The downstream systemic effects are huge & lasting.

Duke professor Dan Ariely had longstanding friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, newly released files show Ariely is named in 636 of the some 3 million newly released files. He was a prominent professor at Duke over the course of his correspondence with Epstein.

Seriously! And the article to which he is presumably responding counted 7 times. He wrote that he believed Epstein when he said the allegations against him were untrue, but the friendship began in 2010, many years after a conviction for said crimes being alleged. dukechronicle.com/article/duke...

Talk the Talk: Jan. 20, 2026 We have the 411 on your FYP. Have you noticed things in your feed are staying closer to home?

I was also in the β€œa block” that day (first segment) to talk about TikTok nearby (a feature in some parts of Europe that I speculate may be being tested in the US), during which I had to climb on and off a tall stool while on camera. www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/v...

That price tag may be missing on purpose. Why? Dr. Jess Ghilani is teaching us about dynamic pricing β€” what it means for consumers and our wallets.

I’m on linear tv at 3 today (KDKA #Pittsburgh) talking about chatbots and teenagers. I’m toward the bottom of the hour (which will lead into local news at 4). I’ll share the link when I have it. Here is my spot from Jan 20th on dynamic pricing. www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/v...

I was hoping the one used in Sabrina Carpenter’s Grammys performance was the real deal but I think it was an led facsimile.

Photo of the appropriately named Winter Mausoleum in Allegheny Cemetery: a large blocky stone mausoleum with large ornamental columns in the Egyptian Revival style, fronted by a wide set of seven stairs flanked by buxom sphinx statues. The mausoleum is surrounded by trees and everything is under a layer of about eight inches of snow.

Several feet in front of the mausoleum, someone has sculpted a likeness of one large-breasted statue out of snow, replicating its engimatic smole with twigs plucked from a dead branch that lays nearby.

Pittsburgh, I need you to know that someone made a snow-tittysphinx.

We often make sure we get a family photo with to cause it looks large for us esp after spending so much time in the cemetery in the early part of pandemic times.

Thank you to Jack Troy at @triblive.bsky.social for reaching out for my comment on Meta naming Dana Powell McCormick as President today. She has a long resume and a lot of experience, and her marital ties are bonus regulatory buffer.

Media consolidation can really come back to haunt. City Paper was acquired by the Blocks in 2023 (after orig being indie-owned, then bought by the Butler Eagle in 2016). We had 2 great alt weeklies but in 2001, the City Paper bought InPgh; similar to how the PG bought the Pittsburgh Press in '92).

I haven’t and won’t search bc I won’t yield even the tiniest engagement bump generated by doing so, but at this point (from my comparatively insignificant academic perch), it’s hard not to admire the lucrative grift she cultivated through that self anointed parent/pregnancy economist expert title.
