there was a sense in the way the line of trees on the ridge resembled a mossy spine undulating across the backdrop... there was a sense in the way the mist merged with the branches, stuffed itself into the empty spaces like gauze... that ancient wounds were being stanched... and that the tower lay at the line dividing deep geologic time from the recent past, even with the white of its mock crenellations smudged gray by the years, while the sheet of gray water in the foreground appeared to emanate fom the tower, itself empowered in that way by the history that lay behind it.
the top of the tower emerged from the mist like a premonition or the beginning of a fate foretold ages ago, leading into the deep water and the earth beneath
