I had a good music practice routine today. Mostly on the shakuhachi and then the Irish flute. I also did a little bit of improvisation on the fujara.

Not going to AWP. I don’t really need another tote bag.

OMG this is bad.

I just started reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and I’m already entranced by the beauty and intensity of Ellison’s prose. I don’t know why it has taken me so long get around to finally reading this book.

Many years ago I read his book on script theory. Not impressed.

I don’t usually seek out gig opportunities anymore, but if somebody asks me to play I will generally do it. Today I’ll be accompanying (on flute) my friends Ted and Paul who will be playing at the Seneca Brew Pub in Manlius.

Yesterday I heard that my shakuhachi mentor, Yodo Kurahashi II, suffered a severe stroke while he was teaching in New York. He is hospitalized now and has a long rehabilitation ahead of him. I am heartbroken.

I have a poem in the new issue of Worcester Review. It’s nice to see I share an issue with Denise Duhamel, a poet I’ve always been a fan of.

I’m packing today for a trip to Rochester NY. Going there tomorrow for a shakuhachi workshop taught by the great Yodo Kurahashi II who is visiting from Kyoto.

Brilliant poet. I heard him do a reading at Cornell many years ago.

I recorded myself playing “Jinbo Sanya” on the shakuhachi and posted it on Facebook. I think it turned out well. I’ve struggled with that piece for years but I feel like I’m finally starting to get some confidence in playing it.

I remember the mmp sci-fi novels from way back when I was a kid. I got them from the local drugstore. They were the first books I ever bought, and they were my gateway into literature and the world of the imagination.

I love my wife and I’m totally devoted to her BUT I have kindof a celebrity crush and it is Gwendoline Christie.

I like to read biographies of artists, writers, and musicians. I think it’s because I’m endlessly curious about all the ways that art emerges from human life.

Tom’s Crossing by Mark Z. Danielewski is an amazing, beautiful, and intense book. I’ve never read anything else like it.
