Anyway, hope it helps someone today or someday.
I always felt like I acquired all this expertise I don’t ever want to use again, and I hope the same for anyone who needs to learn it now.
It also made me vengeful; still working on legal action against the roofer (Cory Nichols, “Roofing Experts of New York” 🤡 shown here)
There are other people who are responsible, in long-arc ways, for the fires in LA, and I hope someday some folks carry legal weight to address that too.
Nothing in here is legal advice and nothing is to tell you it’s all gonna be alright. It’s awful. But it does get better in steps.
And I will say that it was powerful therapy to live thru a worst case scenario and just fucking move through it. It def made me a better and stronger person.
For me, I wished that someone could just tell me the very next thing to do, so that’s the spirit I’m writing this in.
I know about a dozen folks who just found themselves in this situation and my heart breaks for all of them as well as all them I don’t know.
As for rebuilding, that’s another thread for another day. But I guess my advice is not to think about it right now and to focus all energy of getting insurance outcomes to reflect the actual impact on your life. That is what will allow you to rebuild, when it’s time.
That’s obviously at odds with doing the rebuild perfectly.
So one thing you’ll be negotiating with your insurance company is how long you will be compensated for staying elsewhere. Pay close attention to this, we had the rug pulled because I didn’t give that the attention it needed.
Rebuilding took forever and I had to learn everything about … everything, from HVAC systems to insulation to city permits.
In our case, we also had to do the rebuilding as quickly as possible because we didn’t have another place to live, although we made do through the kindness of our networks.
