It's discouraging, but I'm still here! I'm still working on stories and figuring out the best way to continue exploring the rich world of West African hair braiders and communicating their needs and desires to the world.
I started working on this piece when I was in grad school and I was so proud to finally see it published.
I have been pitching lots of stories about this community since, but I have not seen much interest from editors.
Two years ago today, a story I wrote about the physical pain West African braiders often experience was published.
This article, which features my mother, remains one of my favorite stories l've ever written.

Hi all! I started a Substack newsletter, Beautiful Thoughts, two years ago today as an early birthday gift to myself! It is a space for me to explore the world of beauty across the African diaspora, what motivates and influences our perceptions of beauty, etc.
